Strange dents in fingernails

Hello there. I am a 20 year old female. I have never been diagnosed with a thyroid condition, but my mother has been diagnosed with a condition where her thyroid seems to switch back and forth between underactive and overactive. (I am not sure if there is a name for that) I have almost all of the same symptoms as her, so I am pretty positive that I too have thyroid problems. Recently we have both been experiencing the same weird dents in the tips of our fingernails. It only occurs on our left hands, and on our index, middle, and ring fingers. The dents are identicle. It is almost like the middle of the fingernail is very brittle so it causes a dent to form. We have showed our dermatologist and she had no idea what it was, and didn't seem to be concerned. I just wanted to know if anyone here has ever heard of something like this happening to anyone.
Also, I do not have health insurance anymore, so I cannot get tested or see a thyroid specialist... which is another reason I am seeking advice on here.

Thank you!

Re: Strange dents in fingernails

i'm no expert, but i don't think anyone could give conclusive advice with the details you provided. brittle nails, which could be causing your 'dents' is a definite symptom of thyroid issues however.

you really need to get tested. there is TONS of info on this board about what tests you need to determine if you have an issue. you can even request the tests yourself - you don't need to see a doctor first. then, if the tests show you have a thyroid issue, you'll be better informed to make a decision about seeing a doctor.

if you do have thyroid disease, not treating could cause serious problems down the road.

Re: Strange dents in fingernails

Thanks guys. I'm in the process of trying to get my health insurance back. So I'll be back on here once I get tested. I'm really scared though, I've been there to see my mom go through painful biopsies and other things that didn't sound very fun But I know I'll have to deal with all of those things eventually. I've gotten these symptoms much younger than my mother, she started seeing them when she was pregnant and in her 20's I think. I started to see symptoms at the age of 16. The fingernail thing is just weird, and I do have eggshell nails, but my mom doesn't. So I don't think that's why they have dents. But I'll ask my doctor about it whenever I get health insurance. Thanks again!

Re: Strange dents in fingernails

Try and find some pictures online of beau's lines. Those can occur anytime you're sick enough that the nail growth gets interrupted. If you're close to your mom and you both had the flu or a bad cold or anything at the same time, you both might have ended up with a groove in the same area of the nails. I think people with thyroid disorders are probably more prone to get them cause they're system is more easily shaken by other illnesses. There's also a lot of sites that post pictures of all kinds of nail deformities that you can scroll thru and try and match up. It's amazing what your nails can tell you about your health.

Good luck on the insurance thing. I know that must be hard.

Re: Strange dents in fingernails

I have hypothyroidism and have started to notice in the past 6-8 months dents in my fingernails as well (which coincides with a worsening of my hypo-T). For me, they occur mostly just on the pinky fingers, and they are small little dents or gouges.

I have also noticed that I have lost my lunulae (halfmoons) on my fingernails. This is apparently supposed to mean something but I can't recall off hand. I always had lunulae since I was a child, so this change is noticeable to me.

I personally feel these changes are connected to my thyroid disease.

Re: Strange dents in fingernails

Hi, I am 33 and have the same thing happening to my nails. They dent just sligth of the center of the nail and my pointer fingernail seems to be curving down quite more than I ever remember. I have had diabetes, not sure if that causes anything in the nails, but I am wondering if you have found any answers??
