Question Heat Intolerance...any answers?

I've suffered not being able to tolerate heat since I was a child (I'm 30 now). I never understood why I got so sick from play sports. I was very active as a child and my mom always tried to persuade me to sit it out and I would never listen. One year, while playing softball out in the hot Kansas heat, I ended up having to leave the game, jump on my bike and peddle home as quick as I could. I ended up being so sick! I've had at least 2-3 episodes where I've gotten so sick from being out in the heat where I thought I was going to die. My heat intolerance has gotten worse the past 10-13 years and really seems to have taken a nose dive after having my 3 children.

It's not just the sun and outside heat that do me in, but warm rooms in the house or fireplaces, etc. My husband is always cold and numerous times he's put the fireplace on only to end up making me sick (nauseous).

My mom and brother also suffer from this and according to my mom, it can be traced back to my great-great grandmother. No telling how much further it goes back then that?!

Anyway, I'm also a migraine sufferer and I recently went to see a neurologist about those and he totally blew off my sensitivity to heat and told me that it's probably a "form of migraine" since you can have symptoms of migraines without an actual headache. While that may or may not be true, I don't think that is my problem at all!

I've had blood tests done numerous times and the hormones always seem to be fine. The only consistent finding is low blood sugar.

I've come across Chiari Malformation One and I'm currently pursuing that and have an MRI scheduled for June 2009, but unfortunately the neurologist doesn't think I have it despite the overwhelming evidence of symptoms I have. I guess we'll see with the MRI.

Anyway, I've searched all over the net and the possible causes of heat intolerance don't seem to fit me. I can't go out in the heat, sun, be in hot interiors, can't clean, exercise or play with my kids. If I do, I run a good risk of the following symptoms:

red face
throbbing headache
excessive sweating
nauseousness

basically feeling like I'm going to implode. It's horrible and takes a cold bath and laying down with ice packs and migraine meds to eventually cool down.

Has anyone else been given any diagnosis? Are there any good tricks that work for you? I've tried drinking water while outside, gatorade, wearing a large brimmed hat, sunglasses, cool band around my neck, cold water on the wrists, etc and I still am debilitated by it. I feel like I'm missing out on my childrens' growing up. Summer is suppose to be fun and I absolutely dread it Other people just don't understand and I've actually been told that I need to suck it up and persevere through my episodes. Instead of taking a break and cooling down...push on! lol If only they knew!!! What's worse, my oldest daughter, who is 6, is showing signs of heat sensitivity as well. Thankfully, she's not very sports orientated and being a sufferer myself, I can watch the signs and make her slow it down. I vowed never to blow off how she feels when it comes to heat and to always be on the side of caution! I even warn her teachers to watch her on recess and during gym. Not like the numerous coaches and adults in my life that thought my almost passing out was weakness and laziness

I'd appreciate any help, advice and support

Re: Heat Intolerance...any answers?

You must be my twin. Believe me I know where you are coming from!!! There was a show on this subject on Discovery Health. Fabre disease is one that involves heat intolerance & a missing eyzme. I was tested for this but was negative. Look up Fabre. I too have relatives who have the same issue.

Others even my husband tell me I'm just not allowing myself to get used to the climate. I was a happy camper when we lived in Fargo-out every day whether it was below zero or not.

Got to go but I will get back to you about my Bag of Tricks. Look up ice vests like the Olympic runners used. Fam

Re: Heat Intolerance...any answers?

As much as I hate to hear about other people going through this, it's also a comfort to know I'm not alone! I really wish some doctor or neurologist would take this issue serious and try to figure a diagnosis out! It's horrible to think I may feel this way for my entire life! It's not really a life when you're afraid to do anything in fear of making yourself sick.

I actually saw a pain specialist once and he had no clue about the heat sensitivity and all he wanted to do was harp on my "fear" to exercise! That I needed to just do it and the more I do it, the more likely my body would get use to it! Hearing crap like that makes my blood boil! They don't have a clue! From what I've read, each time you experience a major overheating, you do further damage to your body and make yourself even more sensitive and susceptible to future episodes. So the theory of "pushing through it" is not only insensitive, but could be very damaging and dangerous to people like us!

Can't wait to hear your tricks! I'll take any suggestions I can get! Thank you for your response
