Thyroid guru Dr. John Lowe...your thoughts Midwest

I have found some of his writings on the internet. I also found he lives nearby. I e-mailed the office to find that they are only doing phone consultations at the moment. I found that he is a chiropractor. Can he treat? Midwest, I know you have referred to his, I guess I'll call it philosophy from time to time. Is this an avenue worth pursuing? I like what he says and he continues to do research but it is not clear to me if a chiropractor can treat.

Re: Thyroid guru Dr. John Lowe...your thoughts Midwest

I've learned from people here who've gone to them that many celebrity thyroidologists don't practice what they preach, and most don't accept insurance. I would be personally reluctant to pay out of pocket for treatment that may radically differ from what their books and websites espouse. So I have to remain neutral in regard to recommending them to anyone.

It appears from what he writes that Dr. Lowe cannot prescribe, but mainly gives advice about what to ask of your personal doctor in the way of treatment. That means you'd have to find an MD willing to cooperate with a chiropractor. I don't know for a fact... but have a suspicion that such an MD might rarer than hen's teeth, given how most feel about chiros in general, and T3 proponents in particular.

So, don't ask me to say either "yea" or "nay". But do let us know what happens if you decide to try.

Re: Thyroid guru Dr. John Lowe...your thoughts Midwest

I've been reading Lowe too and find his theories to be very interesting-- he claims that 90% of fibromyalgia pts have some kind of thyroid disease and that the ones that are euthyroid have something called "thyroid hormone resistance" (similar to type II diabetes but with thyroid hormone instead of insulin resistance). He treats them with high doses of T3.

As far as I can see from my research he's the only one out there espousing these ideas (at least the only one who had done any publishing-- but if anyone has found others I'd like to hear about it) so he's really a lone voice in the wilderness. He has done a couple of double blinded studies but the numbers of participants are very small.

I agree that to find an MD who will follow Lowe's protocol is going to be very difficult. I'm sure there are naturopaths out there who do but they won't likely contract with any insurance companies. It's a tough call. Maybe someday down the road there will be some clinical studies to test out these ideas but since I don't see much money for any drug companies here I doubt the funding will be there.
