Is 50 mcg Synthroid enough to make a difference?

I was diagnosed as having "slight Hypothyroidism" about 4 months ago. I was given two 50 mcg sample boxes but the RX was not renewed. I got my Thyroid tested again and still showed up as "slight Hypothyroidism". I was hoping the Dr would give me 100 mcg strength but instead he once again gave me 50 mcg. Is 50 mcg enough to do anything?

It really depends on your lab numbers and how you feel
Can you post with your ranges.. there are plety of ppl on the board who can advise on dosage.
How do you feel ?When you were on the 50 and when without ?

Re: Is 50 mcg Synthroid enough to make a difference?

I got my blood test results back:

Testosterone, Bioavailable and SHBG-27 (Reference range 11 to 80)

Testosterone, Total-353 (Reference range 350 to 890)

Testosterone, Bioavailable-198.7 (Reference range 130 to 680)

Thyroid Stimulating Hormone-H 5.233 [Reference range 0.358-3.800]

FSH-3.6 [Reference range 1.4-18.1]

LH Level-4.6 [Reference range 1.5-9.3]

Prolactin, Serum-16.3 [Reference range 2.1-17.7]

Prostate Specific Antigen-0.42 [Reference range 0.00-2.50]

For the second time, the Dr said I have SLIGHT Hypothyroidism. Although this is the first time I had this detailed of testing. He is willing to give me Synthroid again (he gave me two months of 50 mcg samples before but I ran out).

Re: Is 50 mcg Synthroid enough to make a difference?

Steve,
Your doc needs to order a "complete thyroid scan"
Your doc seems to be one of the usual not so upto date docs..
THE TSH is long gone as a benchmark for thyroid issues.
yes anyone looking at it would definitely diagnose you as hypoT.
You need more labs
Free T3, T4, antobodies

A decent doctor cannot give you a medication dosage based on the TSH alone and I will not be surprised if it did nothing for you.

My TSH levels are close to 3 and the Free T3 and Free T4 are close to mid of the range and yet a 25mcg Synthroid helps some.
