Smile Thyroid hurts after eating shrimp???

Hello,
Nice to meet you all...I was doing a search and found your forum...I just bought some Iodoral to treat myself..I was Hyperthyroid..I have a nodule...but my endo doctor says my TSH is normal so I am okay..but I just gained 20 lbs from eating apple sauce and raisins mostly..anyway...I bought the Iodoral thinking I was deficient in iodine because when I eat shrimp, I get an aching sensation in my thyroid...does that make sense to anyone but me... lol

Re: Thyroid hurts after eating shrimp???

If your nodule is hyperfunctioning - making it's own supply of thyroid hormone - you're going to stimulate it even more by taking an excess of iodine that you probably don't need. This may be what's happening to a smaller extent when you eat shrimp.

Hyperthyroidism isn't something you want to treat by DIY methods. You can really get yourself into trouble with that iodine.

Re: Thyroid hurts after eating shrimp???

I am only out 7 months since my lobectomy so I don't know much. I am now on meds and starting to feel like myself again.

So what is up with Shrimp? is it full of iodine or something?

Re: Thyroid hurts after eating shrimp???

Thanks midwest...I am also taking Genistein which is a soy product for osteoporosis and thin skin...and just read that it suppresses the thyroid...
I think I am going back and forth between being hyper and hypo..but that's my opinion....my tsh is normal..so my primary says I am fine..so it's either self treat or nothing....until someone reschedules my endo appt but then she didn't do anything either...but press on the nodule and try to biopsy it. She didn't care that my hair was falling out.

Shrimp is supposed to be a good source of iodine.

Re: Thyroid hurts after eating shrimp???

If you only had TSH tested, you really need more tests. Did you have free T4/T3 and antibodies done? Do you have any results at all to share here, even if it's only TSH? "Normal" TSH is not always as normal as MDs would have you believe.

Do you know you can self order these tests from online labs for less than $100? The results might not be enough for some MDs to pay attention to, but at least knowing where your levels stand could help you decide whether it's worth pressing the issue with your current doc or to consult another one.

The problem with your method of self-treatment is that it's like flooring the gas pedal while simultaneously flooring the brakes. Soy is an inhibitor; iodine a stimulator. Without knowing where your actual T4/T3 stand, you don't really know which pedal to let up on.
