thyroid replacement and Coumadin?

Question for you~

Is anyone on Coumadin (warfarin) or other anticoagulant, along with thyroid replacement?

I understood from my doctor that, should this be necessary for me in the future, it can be a significant interaction.

Thank you,

Re: thyroid replacement and Coumadin?

The prescribing information for Synthroid (and presumably all other thyroid replacement meds) says that levothyroxine increases the effect of anticoagulant agents. Prothombin time has to be carefully monitored and adjustment of the Coumadin dose made accordingly.

Thanks for your reply~
Hematologist has me on 81 mg. aspirin a day 'for now,' hoping to avoid the warfarin altogether! (This is due to autoantibodies testing positive in my blood, for a clotting syndrome where platelets stick together...)

After finding out from endo that there is interaction, and with the ups and downs of my thyroid numbers all the time, I am trying hard not to be scared out of my wits...

maybe just move across the street from the lab
lolol
not funny I guess

Re: thyroid replacement and Coumadin?

I know this is an older post, but I take warfarin and thyroid meds. I take them at opposite ends of the day, and usually have to lower my warfarin dose when I raise my thyroid meds. Keep a close eye on your INR and you should be ok!
