hyperthyroidism - which treatment should i choose??

hi,

ive just been diagnosed with an over active thyroid. i found out by chance when having a blood test for something else. i dont think i really have any of the symptoms but i have seen a specialist who says i have an option of 2 different treatments. radioiodine or carbimazole. he recommends radioiodine because that way he solves problem for good whereas its prone to coming back when stopping carbimazole. my problem is i was weeks away from having ivf. this has ceased until my levels are normal. i would like to hear from people who have possibly taken carbimazole whilst pregnant or anyone who has under taken radioiodine treatment and how long did they havre to wait before they could try to conceive. ive got a decision to make and dont know whats best??

You would have to ask the nuclear med place you are having this done, but you would likely want to wait at least 6 months to get pregnant after RAI to be safe.

I think you would want to talk to a reproductive endocronologist as well as a high risk obgyn about these issues.

There is another answer as well---some people opt to get the thyroid removed surgically, and there are benefits to that as well.

I wouldnt do a thing about it frankly until you have waited a few months. I was diagnosed with hyperthyroidism and both my doctors told me i should have radio ablation therapy/ I stopped using iodized salt and waited a year and now I am completely free of any signs. The body has exceelent restorative powers.
