Thyroid Tsh verses Tsh with reflex

I had my thryroid checked last spring the test was Tsh and the results were 7.02 I was told to wait and have another test in the fall. The test was a TSH with Reflex and the results were 5.240 the range from the lab is 0.465-4.68 .
What is the difference in having a TSH and a TSH with Reflex? Thank you for any help you can give.

Re: Thyroid Tsh verses Tsh with reflex

"TSH with reflex to T4" means that the TSH is tested first, and if it returns out of lab range, only then is the T4 test run.

Your TSH was hypothyroid level both times. How are you feeling? Are you seeking a diagnosis of hypothyroidism, but your doctor is refusing to confirm it? You have grounds for treatment without being made to wait any longer.

Re: Thyroid Tsh verses Tsh with reflex

I just received a call from my family doctors office; her nurse said that my thyroid numbers were to low to treat for hypothyroidism. hmmm... why have a scale at the lab to go by? I feel so tired. I try to run the sweeper and feel like I could fall asleep. I am exhausted. I had my heart checked and it is okay. My hair is falling out I get cold to the bone. My eyes are sensitve to light. I have gained 20 punds in 3yrs. I am becoming depressed. I just need a life line of hope. Any suggestions?-Kathy

Re: Thyroid Tsh verses Tsh with reflex

You need to keep looking for a doc who will treat you. The fact that you have symptoms and a TSH over range and they won't treat you is just ridiculous. I don't know how many good docs there are in WV but perhaps you can post here for a recommendation. Also call around to pharmacies in your area and see if any doctors are prescribing natural desiccated thyroid hormones. The prescribers tend to be more open-minded and willing to treat based on symptoms instead of lab tests. Keep trying, you will get help if you are persistant.

I absolutely agree. Keep looking for a more competent MD. Your TSH is definitely not "too low to treat." There are plenty of MDs out there who will treat you now. You don't have to suffer.
