Synthroid & Multivitamins

Can anyone tell me if it is okay to take a multivitamin when I take my Synthroid? I tend to forget my vitamin if I don't take it at the same time as my Synthroid, so I was thinking I could take them at the same time. I have heard that iron and calcium may affect how well the Synthroid works. The vitamin I take has 450mg of calcium and 18 mg of iron. Anyone know if this vitamin could mess up the effects of my Synthroid?

Re: Synthroid & Multivitamins

It's a very bad idea to take them together. The iron and calcium will bind up the thyroid hormone, making it unavailable to the cells where it's needed.

Re: Synthroid & Multivitamins

I was told to take synthroid about 40 minutes before taking a multivitamin or calcium.

Re: Synthroid & Multivitamins

You better double-check with your source, garber. And if they tell you the same thing again, don't believe them. Synthroid's official prescribing information says that calcium, iron, antacids, and several other OTC and/or prescription agents need to be taken 4 hours apart from their product or absorption will be decreased.
