Robotic Thyroid Surgery...

Has anyone heard of this, done research or know of anyone that has gone this route? It's basically a transaxillary thyroid removal by going thru the under arm instead of the neck to prevent scars. I tried to research this and found little information online in terms of reviews, experiences, safety, if it's covered by insurance etc. I asked 2 endos and a surgeon and they don't know a whole lot about it or who might be a good person to have this done by. Please let me know if anyone has any information about going this route.

Re: Robotic Thyroid Surgery...

You would have to find the surgeon in the article/research that you read about, because it obviously isn't common---and others aren't doing it yet. Sometimes people try things and they take off, and sometimes they find other side effects that make it not worth it. for example, if your tumor is too large, or your thyroid enlarged, they might not be able to use the technique you are seeking.

It is somewhat common to use laprascopic techniques, there is a surgeon at columbia presbytarian that does it this way.

To be honest, I have no scar with the traditional technique, and it was a lot easier having the soreness only in my neck, than if I did some other method that would leave a swelling in the neck where the removal is, and then discomfort/surgical site on my arm too.

Also, you are having this surgery near your major artery, and your vocal chords, so you want the surgeon to be not only proficient, but to easily see everything in those danger zones.

You shouldn't have more than an inch or two scar from a good surgeon.

You also want as little parathyroid damage as possible. Don't know how that can happen when done "long distance". If this procedure isn't commonly done, as it seems not to be, you're far better off with a conventional surgery performed by someone who does them almost daily. If the surgeon doesn't regularly do thyroidectomies at least that often, find another.

Re: Robotic Thyroid Surgery...

Good point guys, I guess this is out of the question. I was just trying to keep my options open and per the surgeons that did do this, it was safe and fda approved but I doubt the surgeons have done it enough for me to feel 100% confident that they will not destroy the parathyroids, voice box, or nerves. Would I trade in a scar for damaged to these things, most definitely not.
