Antibodies question..?

Hey

A question for Javelina/Midwest or anyone else in the know

I was diagnosed with hypothyroidism at the end of August and was put on 50mcg eltroxin (brand of levothyroxine). Six weeks ago I upped to 75mcg. I was never checked for antibodies to check for hashimotos. I have an appointment with a new doctor on thursday and planned on requesting this. However, I was just thinking there that maybe it's too late to check now...? Would they be suppressed by taking eltroxin? Or even lowered? Or..?

Last time I was checked my TSH and freet4 were around midpoint of the normal range. That was when I was on 50mcg. I would expect freet4 to be up at the top now and tsh to be low if that makes any difference?

Thanks

Re: Antibodies question..?

Taking Eltroxin doesn't cure possible Hashi's so you can have those antibodies checked. They do tend to have a life of their own and fluctuate but most of us with Hashi's have more or less high antibodies.

Re: Antibodies question..?

Thanks for the quick reply finnmaid. I understood that taking eltroxin doesnt cure hashis but I thought it might suppress the actual measurement of antibodies in the blood.

Re: Antibodies question..?

It's my view that there isn't much point in worrying about antibodies once you've been diagnosed. Discovering their presence can sometimes convince an MD to treat, but there's no guarantee of that. And I have never seen anything 'official' that says treatment reduces their numbers... although I won't say it isn't possible; I just don't know. The studies I've read show that selenium is the only substance that can reduce TPO antibodies (not Tg Abs) by up to 40%.
But ... Nothing I know of will stop ABs altogether, and since they are not responsible for any symptoms in and of themselves, what's the point of trying to reduce them?

Re: Antibodies question..?

Ok, thanks. I know confirming hashis wouldnt make a difference to treatment, and I already had a diagnosis with a below range ft4 and above range tsh but I guess if I'm stuck with something for life i would just like to know why that is. Or at least what can be found out.. maybe its pointless but at least I'd know that little bit more.

Thanks again for the replys Finnmaid and Midwest

Re: Antibodies question..?

I have Hashi's with negative antibodies..... I was told they flucuate so negative does not mean you do not have Hashis..... Hope that helps.
