thyroid and itching

My husband has been having problems with hives for the last 15 years. They come anywhere on his body and the only thing that helps them is steroids. He also has swelling with it occasionally. He has had alot of test and no one seems to know what it is. He has myleodysplasia which we found out about because of the test they ran for his itching. Now they found that he has a thyroid disease. I read in the paper Sunday that itching may be caused by thyroid diseases. What are your thoughts?

Re: thyroid and itching

All I can comment to is the itching ...since my thyroid went haywire 12 years ago my back can itch to the point of driving me insane. I have a back scratcher just for that purpose but find it is not so itchy right after a shower so I am guessing it has to do with the body salts in that area of my back(it is only my back). That is just my guess for my problem. Nothing I have done otherwise...creams/lotions/potions/laundry soap/or clothing changes has made a difference.

Re: thyroid and itching

Has your husband been tested for TPO antibodies? They are one of the two most common causes of hypothyroidism and are also a frequent cause of hives.

Rose... Yes, your neck itching could be caused by antibody assault on your gland, according to my doctor. In the years leading up to and just following my diagnosis, I had episodes of the most indescribably horrible itching on my neck skin covering the thyroid gland. I've had it only once or twice since my levels were optimized 5 or 6 years ago.

Re: thyroid and itching

He has had alot of testing and is still going through some. He goes back to the doctor the end of this month, but no one has mentioned his itching coming from his thyroid.

Re: thyroid and itching

The amount of information the average doctor does not know about thyroid is staggering. I hope he doesn't discover that the hard way.

Re: thyroid and itching

When you go into hyperthyroidism you can have what is considered overall itching. When my medicine was upped too high I went nuts until we figured it out. I dont see my endo that often so I was doing the research myself thinking it was an allergic reaction to detergent, food or creams..
I however didnt have a rash only crazy, god awful itching.

hope this helps

Re: thyroid and itching

Thanks for the input. He has hypothyroidism. They haven't gotten his medicine right yet. His was real high. They gave him medicine and then it went too low.

Re: thyroid and itching

my mother and I are on thyroxine. a few years ago my mother had the most horrendous itching and hives and swellings all over here body. she suffered greatly because of this. Saw a couple of different dr's. had medicine and creams and baths.

it really was awful.

I cannot remember how it stopped in the end, but now it is starting again. Her neck, hands and back.

Has anyone got any suggestions, thoughts, reasons, causes, remedies???
please

Re: thyroid and itching

The only thing that helps my husband is steroids, but the drs. don't like giving them very much. He just uses enough to stop the itching and saves the rest for the next episode.
