Thin Hair. Please help!

The doctor says my thyroid levels are normal, but ever since I developed thyroid problems at the age of 13, I've had thin hair. As a child I always had thick hair. For the last 7 years I've had thin hair, and now I feel like it's getting worse. I've been to a dermatologist and that didn't do me any good. The dermo just told me to count the hairs in my brush and take biotin.

The question is, if my levels are normal, why isn't my hair normal? Should I keep questioning my endo about the hair until something is done? It's very hard being 19 years old with such crappy hair. I can't color or straighten it like other girls. It makes me very depressed.

Also does Synthyroid affect hair too? Am I going to have thin crappy hair for the rest of my life? Someone please help me.

Re: Thin Hair. Please help!

Usually thinning hair means you either aren't optimized on your thyroid hormones (and some good labs will help determine this) or you are low in ferritin or other vitamins or minerals, or you don't tolerate synthetic thyroid hormones well and need to switch to desiccated thyroid.

Ask your doc for some labs: free T3, free T4, ferritin, vitamin D and B12. Post the results here with their ranges. This may give us some clues as to what's going on.

Re: Thin Hair. Please help!

When I was on synthyoid, my hair fell off in massive amount, I kept telling my doctor my synthyoid was not working, he kept telling me my labs were fine. I left this doctor and found another one who would listen to me, this new doctor put me on armour thyroid (old formula), my symptoms went away in two weeks and my hair started to grow back after two months.
Like I mentioned in another post my hair has fallen off and grow back four times. Don't be frustrated, once you are on the right medication and the right dosage, your hair will grow back.
Your thyroid is not regulated, if your doctor doesn't listen to you and your symptoms, you need find another doctor.
