Pregnenolone for Adrenal Fatigue??

Has anyone heard of using pregnenolone for adrenal fatigue rather than hydrocortisone? My doc says that hydrocortisone, if used long term, can actually cause the adrenals to stop functioning once you come off of the hydrocortisone. If you have heard of this, what sort of dose are we talking about? How does one monitor this? He wants me to have my pregnenolone blood levels tested as a baseline...

Re: Pregnenolone for Adrenal Fatigue??

Are you sure its pregnenolone? That's the prohormone for progesterone... and no I've never heard of it being used to treat adrenal fatigue. I've heard of prednisolone being used though...

HC at a physiologic dose is perfectly safe for treatment for AF. Yes, it will cause the adrenals to stop producing cortisol, as will any steroid replacement but you do not take it for so long that they shut down for good, rather you let them rest and heal and then wean off slowly. That's how hormone replacement works, you replace the hormones that the gland would normally produce and the gland stops producing because its feedback loop senses that the levels are adequate. I've read of people who have been on HC for months or even years and were able to wean of successfully. As long as the underlying cause of the fatigue is treated (i.e. hypothyroidism) then the wean will be successful. The only way you can't wean off is if there is pituitary dysfunction or some other problem is there, such as antibodies to the adrenals.

I have no idea if pregnenolone will work or not. I suspect not.

Yes, I take Preglenone and I agree with your doc about getting a baseline first. I take 50 mg/day but that's the middle dose. There is also a smaller and larger dose depending, once again, on what your blood test indicates you need. My doc monitors this by doing a regular blood work up. I suspect your doc would do the same.

Re: Pregnenolone for Adrenal Fatigue??

jenj770,

How long have you been on pregnenolone? Have you noticed a difference in terms of improvement? Have you had cortisol checked after you started to see if that has changed?

Thanks,
Paseo

on and off for over a year, but mostly on.

Pregnenolone, DHEA and Rhodiola all seem to help me.

I just received my saliva kit for my follow up test, but my serum pregnenolone test done a week ago shows my numbers within range.

Re: Pregnenolone for Adrenal Fatigue??

Pregnenolone is considered a hormone balancer and a precursor to all hormones in the body. Some people have had good success treating their adrenal insufficiency with it either in pill form or cream applied to the skin, though unfortunately, I didn't. There is a lot of information available on the internet. It seems a good thing to try before resorting to hydrocortisone treatment.

What happened with you? Side effects or it just didn't work for you?

Re: Pregnenolone for Adrenal Fatigue??

Hi Paseo...I tried a pregnenolone cream recommended by my doctor. After a few days, I felt very hyper and stopped it. My doctor said because it is the precursor to all hormones, it probably was boosting adrenal hormones that didn't need boosting. Tests some months ago indicate that my adrenals are pretty normal the first three times of the day but high at night. I've been taking supplements recommended by my doctor for the last few months and just started on a low dose of hydrocortisone. I plan on new saliva tests in a few weeks to check the adrenals again.

Re: Pregnenolone for Adrenal Fatigue??

I agree with Jen on the Rhodiola . . . I've had wonderful improvement in my adrenals there, but it took a few weeks to start. You have to go real easy with herbs, that is, be patient. I take two caps of Mind Body & Spirit and then I usually feel it within about thirty minutes, but it did take awhile to kick in. No luck for me with DHEA.

Prednesone is a synthetic dirivitive of hydrocortisone. Pregnelone is known as the mother hormone. It is the foundation that other hormones are are built off. In women Pregnelone will create progesterone, but in men it typically get created into Testoserone. It is also formed into many various other hormones, usaully dictated by gender.

"Pregnenolone can be converted to progesterone. The critical enzyme step is two-fold using a 3-beta-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase and a delta 4-5 isomerase. The latter transfers the double bond from C5 to C4 on the A ring. Progesterone is the entry into the delta-4-pathway, resulting in production of 17-hydroxy progesterone and androstenedione, precursor to testosterone and estrone. Aldosterone and corticosteroids are also derived from progesterone or its derivatives"

Pregnenolone Update...

So, I have been on the pregnenolone 1 week tomorrow. I seem to have a little better energy (this could be the testosterone too). I'm not sure how much to attribute to the pregnenolone, but I will be on it for 2 more weeks before the T3 begins. I'm hoping that is when I will start feeling much better (fingers crossed!)

Re: Pregnenolone Update...

That's great...I'll be really interested as to how the pregnenelone works for you. I tried a cream and it seemed to make me sort of hyper but I've read quite a bit about it and it seems to work really well for some. Keep us posted!

Re: Pregnenolone Update...

I've been taking 50mg of hydrocortisone with 100-150mg of pregnenolone for adrenal fatigue. Is that too high? some people say that pregnenolone can treat AF since it may convert into cortisol
my labs are:
AM cortisol 4.0mg
1pm cortisol, 2.4mg
