Exclamation Three days post op....feeling odd...is this normal??

So I had my surgery on Friday, late afternoon. Came home on Saturday. Have done pretty well. Pain not too bad. No taking pain med unless necessary. Just some burning around the incision line. Some feeling of fullness in my throat. Hard time clearing my throat. And my voice is shot - but dr did tell me that one of my nodules was wrapped around some vocal cord nerves and he had to "scrape" the nerves to get all the growth off. I have been having some continued dizziness which I am reading on the web is pretty normal post op up to 1-2wks. Still very much exhausted.....even walking to the bathroom wears me out. I assume this is normal too.

Today, however, I am feeling a little odd over all. I feel like I am full or tight in my chest....and like my heart is coming out ....just bounding.......I can hear and feel it in my ears....but the rate is normal (70-80). I am not in any distress but I feel "winded" by this feeling in my chest as well.

My post op is scheduled for Thursday am.

Any input would be appreciated. Anyone else feel like this post op??

Thanks for any advice!

Re: Three days post op....feeling odd...is this normal??

If you experience something odd, after any surgery, you should call the surgeon's office and make sure it's not an emergency. Particularly, after this surgery, sometimes your parathyroids go, and you would need calcium.

Also, if you are taking pain meds, those have a lot of side effects as well (dizziness, tiredness, constipation, etc.) There is going to be a lot of swelling in your throat for months, so you might want to use advil/motrin and ice to help ease that feeling.

The tightness in the chest is nothing at all like I experienced---I think you should call your doctor and make sure that's nothing, it sounds very scary to me.

Re: Three days post op....feeling odd...is this normal??

OK. So I had another episode last night before bed, again this am and ALL afternoon- it almost feels like my throat is swelling up (not choking or hard to swallow, just lots of "pressure" in my neck). I've started checking my BP too...its normal for me - 90s/50s Although pulse is only in the upper 50s which is a bit low for me. The hospital nurse called to follow up and ended up talking to my husband who told her I was having problems. She spoke to me and of course tried to not alarm me, but also said I should call my surgeon and talk to his nurse. So I finally did.

Ordered for me to have some blood work done, and of course said if my chest pain becomes more significant (like a heart attack I guess) that I should go to the ER. I don't feel like I am having an MI, I just feel like my heart is coming out of my chest, short of breath like I've been climbing the stairs and that my head is gonna pop off the top of my neck. OP lab closes at 5 and the orders aren't there yet so I will go in the am to have those done. I see him on Thursday AM so we will see what he has to say then......

I asked what he was ordering.....she told me the following:

TSH, T4, Magnesium, CBC, CCP

Any additional thoughts?
Thanks.
