PAINFUL lymph nodes in breast/underarm... is this related to my new thyroid prob?!

Hi all! I am new to hypoT and in the last week or so I have been having significant pain in BOTH underarm/breast areas where the lymph nodes are. Has anyone else had this problem or issue? It's so bad I can't sleep on my stomach or either side and I can't take my bra off because it makes the pain worse. It's a dull, pressure that I have. Not sharp or stabbing. I am on birth control pills that are continous with no weeks off so I don't get a period, so it's not related to my period. I have endometriosis and have for years and have never had this problem.

I am still in the diagnostic stage on this whole process. So the dr is still running tests to find out what's going on... I have TSH .8 (Range .6 - 5.0) Free T4 0.8 (Range .7 to 2.0) so I am not sure what I am other than some sort of hypo.

If it's Hashi's would it effect my lymph nodes or am I crazy and just trying to explain this away so it's one less thing I have to deal with????

Unless there's some other underlying cause it's very possible your hypothyroidism is the reason for the painful nodes. I've had stabbing pains in my axillary nodes from time to time when I was at my most hypo.

With your low TSH and low FT4 hopefully your doc is doing a full workup of your pitutary function as well. It's possible you have a secondary cause of your hypothyroidism.

Re: PAINFUL lymph nodes in breast/underarm... is this related to my new thyroid prob?

I haven't been sick lately... okay well everyone else's idea of normal sick... aka cough, cold symptoms. Just my hypo issues and endometeriosis that flared up really bad for the last 3 or 4 months now. Which I am sure is related to thyroid. My doc ran tons of test and I go Wednesday for Thyroid Scan and Uptake... which btw what is that for? What will it tell him? My dr is good about looking at the big picture but didn't really explain a whole lot to me.

I have had my fair share of colds/viral infections/bacterial infections (including MRSA) and never had issues with lymph nodes, that is why I thought it must be related to my thyroid. I am glad to know I am not the only one.

Javalina... you're the best... thanks!!!!!!!!!!

Re: PAINFUL lymph nodes in breast/underarm... is this related to my new thyroid prob?

i also suffer from very painful lymphadenopathy.
i am in the beginning process of getting some sort of diagnosis. i think i read somewhere that with hashimotis, you can have lympadenopathy.
but you can also have it with thyroid cancer.

anyway, i know nothing about any of this other then it is upsetting and frustrating.
just wanted to let you know that you aren't the only one with painful lymph nodes.

Thank you littleredhen!!! It is sort of comforting to know I am not alone! My husband isn't the most compassionate or concerned person I know.

Re: PAINFUL lymph nodes in breast/underarm... is this related to my new thyroid prob?

Hi, Andeflora,
Last year I had a very painful swollen lymph node on my neck; at that time, the doc drew blood and discovered my thyroid was out of whack (hyper at that time, but I went hypo right after), so I wouldn't be surprised if the two (thyroid and lymph node) are somehow connected in both your and my situation.
BTW, I really feel your pain (LOL) about your endometriosis -- I had severe endometriosis for over 20 years before finally having a total hysterectomy a couple of years ago. As with thryoid problems, endometriosis makes you feel like total ****** all the time, but you look completely normal. You go to doctor after doctor with a lot of vague (but real) symptoms, only to have the doc say some version of "it's all in your head". After my first surgery, I literally cried with relief when the doc said I had Stage 4 Endo -- finally an answer! I'm sure you've been down the same road (surgeries, multiple courses of Lupron, Danocrine, the works) -- it's extremely tough on you, and it's tough on your relationships. (My current husband's always been pretty understanding about it. It helped a lot, though, when the surgeon came out after my fourth surgery and told him that most of my organs were out of place from all the adhesions -- that kind of got his attention! ) Anyway, just wanted to say that lots of us completely sympathize with your situation and know the struggle you're going through. Best of luck to you!
Mel

Re: PAINFUL lymph nodes in breast/underarm... is this related to my new thyroid prob?

Mel

WOW, sounds like you have been through the ringer too! I am 29 and the 3 different obgyn and endometriosis specialists that I have seen have told me I need to have the total hysterectomy. Honestly, I am TERRIFIED to have it done. I already have 1 ovary that is really bad and they should have taken it out in the first Lap, but because she didn't expect to find it in such horrible shape we never discussed it, so she couldn't take it. I was dx with my first ovarian cyst at 6 yrs old and it was the size of a golf ball! I have 23 yrs invested and finally decided this is IT! I am done with being sick all of the time and go to the ER once a month because the pain is SOOOO BAD. The PO diluadid they gave me to take at home doesn't touch the pain when I have a flair up.

DERN... we women really have a lot to deal with. It's a shame that most doctors don't look at the BIG picture, instead just look at thyroid and endometriosis is a completely separate issue and so is the ovarian cysts and so is the rapid weight gain AND SO IS the itchy skin and so on and so on.

Thanks for you help and sharing your story! It's very comforting to know I am not alone and that I am not the only one that doctors dismiss!

Re: PAINFUL lymph nodes in breast/underarm... is this related to my new thyroid prob?

Hi, Andrea,
Yes, endo is a tough disease (kind of like thyroid issues). Sounds like you've had a really bad time of it if you're having to go to the ER on a regular basis. Just like with thyroid, it seems like with endo that the severity of symptoms often don't match up with the severity of the disease itself. Even though I had a total of six laparoscopies, and had Stage 4 endo every time, my pain wasn't as excruciating as many people with only Stage 1 or 2 (or maybe I was just blocking it out, who knows?) I even had to have quasi-emergency surgery one time because I had an ovarian cyst that blew up to 15 cm (about the size of a soccer ball), but I just thought I'd been eating too much! Talk about clueless, LOL!!

Question for you -- have you tried any hormonal therapy for the endo (such as Lupron, Danocrine, etc.)? The side effects are beastly, but they really do work for a lot of people and can really cut down on the pain. I've done both, and Lupron (six month course) slowed the progression down a bunch. I only mention this because I hate to see anyone as young as you contemplating a hysterectomy. The docs want you to do because it gets you out of their hair (I was 21 the first time I heard the "you need a total hysterectomy" line), but instant menopause brings on a lot of issues of its own, plus it can make things worse with your thyroid.

Take care,
Mel

Re: PAINFUL lymph nodes in breast/underarm... is this related to my new thyroid prob?

I have done the Lupron (which I HATED!). I got some relief, but still had pain and after 3 months the pain came back and was worse than ever. Right now I am on Lybrel, it's a BCP that you take constantly with no time off. The obgyn also wants me to take Lexapro to treat the muscle spasms in my pelvic floor and wall muscles. She was SHOCKED at just how inflamed and spasming they were when she examined me. That is why the Lupron didn't completely get rid of my pain. Because my pain stims from the endoM and the muscles spasms.

I don't wanna have the hysterectomy and my husband who isn't very sympathetic or patient with me about the whole problem doesn't understand why I don't just rip it all out already. UHH.... how about they talk about removing your "man" parts and see how willing you are to have them RIPPED out of you. It's not like I am having a small procedure. I don't think he gets that I DO NOT want to be in this kind of pain. Thankfully, I have a wonderful and supportive mother who has been there since the beginning and is being supportive and asking me what I want.

Thanks for everything!!!!
Andrea
