Large thyroid goiter with normal thyroid levels

I was just wondering if anyone can help. I have a large thyroid goiter that measures 4.4 x 1.7 x 2.4 cm on right lobe and 6.3 x 5.1 x 5.6 cm on left lobe. T3 is 331 and normal range is 230-420, TSH is 2.26 mIU/L, but my c-reactive protein in 1.22 and normal is <80 and Thyroid peroxidase is 578 and normal range is <35. After months of the doctors telling me that I have to wait and see I went in to the urgent care at a county hospital and the docotrs there told me that it is likely I may have to have my thyroid removed because all my levels are normal but I have a large mass. I have not had a FNA yet, that will be scheduled for next week. What, if any are other options as to having the thyroid removed? The docs have not really given me an answer as to what is wrong, any suggestions? Also, is it true that one gains weight after the thyroid is removed?

Re: Large thyroid goiter with normal thyroid levels

What is the size of the "mass" itself? If you do have a large mass, depending upon the fna results you may look at surgery, but I think if you can find a really good surgeon (ENT) it would be better to help you make that determination.

You can try medication---thyroid medication, it can sometimes shrink a goiter (enlarged thyroid) but it would rarely shrink a nodule/mass. It has nothing to do with your blood work. The blood work you had isn't adequate either. You would want to test your thyroid anti-bodies, as well as your free t4 and free t3 levels too.

I had my thyroid out, but due to cancer, I didn't gain weight.
