Re: Thyroid autoantibodies
Welcome, memory. Our blood levels of Hashimoto's antibodies vary, but some folks report very high readings -- particularly if their diagnosis was well after symptoms began and the antibodies have been able to reproduce for a while.
The general treatment for this is a sufficient amount of thyroid meds to help the body balance the hypothyroidism from the Hashi's. Many physicians believe that nothing can be done to address the presence of the antibodies, but studies have shown that Selenium or Maca (an adaptogenic herb that contains selenium) can be helpful in reducing the levels of antibodies and sometimes even eliminating them.
Our Information Archive has several posts regarding Antibodies, Thyroiditis, Selenium, and Maca (see Page 2 with posts on 2/12/02 and 2/21/02).
