Cutting pill in half?

I am taking .50 Levoxyl. For some reason the pills are more chalky or something because even though they are little, they twist and turn and get caught in my throat (every time!). I have to take almost a cup of water with it just for it to go down correctly.
Its not a huge deal or anything, but I was wondering since I am not supposed to drink anything before going under anesthesia next week (except for a little water with my thyroid pill), could I cut the Levoxyl in two smaller chunks (and take them both, just one a couple seconds after the other) so that should help me take less water with it (and be safer for the anesthesia)? Some pills I know you arent supposed to cut in half.
Basically, can I cut my Levoxyl pill in half and take the two chunks one right after another instead of one pill all at once?
Thank you <IMG SRC="http://www.healthboards.com/ubb/smile.gif">
Take care,
Lori

Re: Cutting pill in half?

Hi, Lori.
What's the anesthesia for, if you don't mind me asking? (Just wondering if you're okay.) If I were you, I'd contact the manufacturer to confirm whether or not you can cut the pills. I'm thinking it shouldn't be a problem at all. Also, I think you might be thinking too much. Sometimes, you can build yourself up by anticipating something that isn't really that bad in reality. Just try to relax and take the pill without thinking about it. It might work.
Good luck with everything.

Re: Cutting pill in half?

Hi,
It won't hurt you to use as much water as you need to swallow the pill. The less water, the less you might vomit after surgery, that's all.

Another suggestion...take your pill several hours before surgery. Or even skipping just one will not harm you. Or you could take it later when the anesthetic wore off. There is a lot of flexibility here.

I am with Enuf...I hope you are Ok, and this surgery is minor!!! <IMG SRC="http://www.healthboards.com/ubb/eek.gif">

Try not to worry over the thyroid pill...it is not a big deal, really.

Let us know how you are doing!! TF

Re: Cutting pill in half?

Hi Enuf and Tree Frog! <IMG SRC="http://www.healthboards.com/ubb/smile.gif">
Thank you for replying. The anesthesia is only for dental work (I am getting wisdom tooth out). Thanks for the concern though!! You guys are so thoughtfull <IMG SRC="http://www.healthboards.com/ubb/smile.gif">
Yes, I do have the habit to worry more than I probably should *laugh*, but I tried almost everything I can think of (including totally not thinking about it) and it still gets stuck so I need to chug that water to help it along.
You arent supposed to have anything to eat or drink before the surgery because of aspiration (where you vomit while under anesthesia, and it goes into your lungs, dangerous).
The pharmacy is giving me the manufactorers' number tomorrow. I think I will just try a couple of days with the pill in two smaller pieces to see if that helps lower how much water I take with it.
It doesnt hurt you to miss a day of levoxyl..?
Thank you for the replies, wish me luck next week Im nervous! <IMG SRC="http://www.healthboards.com/ubb/smile.gif">
How are you doing? <IMG SRC="http://www.healthboards.com/ubb/smile.gif">

Re: Cutting pill in half?

Lori, another option is to let it dissolve under your tongue. I haven't tried levoxyl, but I know that neither my Unithroid or my Armour have an unpleasant tast. I am not saying thay are delicious by any means, but that they are tolerable that way.

Re: Cutting pill in half?

No, it won't hurt you to miss a day of levoxyl,
not to make it a habit of course. But one day alone will not hurt you. The thyroid hormone builds up, and even if you stopped taking it completely, you would not instantly go hypothyroid. So one day missed will not harm you.

Let us know how you do. I hope you can eat on Thanksgiving Day!!! <IMG SRC="http://www.healthboards.com/ubb/smile.gif"> Have a happy holiday! TF

Re: Cutting pill in half?

Thank you Everyone <IMG SRC="http://www.healthboards.com/ubb/smile.gif">
Well, I called the manufactorer yesterday and he said I could cut the pill in half. Thats what I did this morning, but guess what? The smaller chunks get stuck also!!!
So now what I am going to do is either miss that day or get up early and take it when I can still drink/eat (then go back to bed for awhile <IMG SRC="http://www.healthboards.com/ubb/wink.gif">).

So another question:
Do you think it's ok if I take my pill 4 hours earlier then I normally do for this one day?

Take care thanks again <IMG SRC="http://www.healthboards.com/ubb/smile.gif">

It is perfectly OK to take your pill 4 hours earlier then you normally do for that one day.

Happy T-Day! TF

Re: Cutting pill in half?

Glad to hear it, Lori! After a couple of days, gargle with warm salt water to help the wounds heal faster. Take it easy.

Re: Cutting pill in half?

Thanks!! I am doing better today, and soooo glad to have it done and over with! The day after surgery I had a bad reaction to the meds they gave me (vomiting, dizzy, etc) so I have only been on Ibuprophen since. Its ok though it hasnt been so bad. I cant wait till I can eat hard things again *laugh* Apparantly the thyroid levels had little or no effect on the anesthesia in case anyone is curious on that.
Thanks again all,
Lori <IMG SRC="http://www.healthboards.com/ubb/smile.gif">

Re: Cutting pill in half?

Lori,
I was reading in, I think "About.com" and they said to take Levoxyl with an 8oz. glass of water. I was on Levoxyl for a while and it works wonders on the side effects. I only wish I could remember the site. LOL can you tell I'm back on Synthroid. BTW, Great to hear you made it through the surgery okay.
Take care,
Kim
