Anyone else having symptoms of "Housefly bites"? Vitamin B-12 deficency!!!

I don't know about anyone else but I was convinced just recently that I had MS. (I've been diagnosed with FM 6 times since 1997) It started back in Feb with intense muscle weakness, spasms, cramping and what I call "housefly bites" (electric like shocks). I was sent to a great FM doctor who did an EMG test and found nerve damage on my left side. He sent me for a lower lumbar MRI to check for nerve compression from my herniated disks. There was no nerve compression (they did find degenerating disks, geez) which now means the nerve damage came from somewhere else. He sent me to a great female Neuro who immediately ordered a bunch of blood tests and a brain MRI. The brain MRI was negative for MS (That's one for me) but the blood test came back with a low Vitamin B-12 count. Normal is &lt;200-1100&gt;, mine was 197, not too bad, BUT, nutritionists say anything below 400 is dangerous. The Neuro told me that is what is causing the "housefly bite" symptoms and possibly alot of my FM symptoms including depression and exhaustion. What is happening is the lack of B-12 is stripping the sheathing around my nerves and that's what I'm feeling. She told me she didn't want to step on my PCP's toes by treating me, she said he should treat me for this. She was very avid about getting immediate attention on this before this causes more nerve damage. She said a lot of people that have gastritis, GERD and thyroid disease get this B-12 deficiency because their stomachs cannot absorb the B-12. She's suggesting a test called a "Shillings test" to check for absorption problems. Here's a thread I have running on the MS boards. <A HREF="http://www.healthboards.com/ubb/Forum84/HTML/000272.html" TARGET=_blank>http://www.healthboards.com/ubb/Forum84/HTML/000272.html</A>
So guys, please if you too have this symptom, get it checked out immediately before it's too late. It's just a normal Vitamin B-12 blood test.
Take care all,
Kim

Hi:
"Housefly" bites?..you say they are like electric shocks? Would you also say they feel like a fine hot needle sensaton, jabbing, to the point when they happen it grabs your attention immediately so that reach for the spot to see if something has bit you?
I've had those sensations for about a year prior to my thyroid lump/cyst appearing. I had them in the same spot as my lump, but also on the fronts of each ankle,in my armpits, and on my thighs. I haven't had them as much lately since the lump appeared as before.
Interesting, let me know if this sounds the same.

YES, it started in the one leg with the nerve damage and then slowly within a couple of weeks started shocking everywhere even on my face but more prodominant on my legs. You actually jump and grab and try to rub or itch the spot. Sounds like you need a B-12 blood test. Let me know, I am interested and do care.

Re: Anyone else having symptoms of "Housefly bites"? Vitamin B-12 deficency!!!

Very interested in this topic because I have been bothered by "unusual sensations" for years. They are about as bad as I have had them right now. Mine are a cross between itching and buzzing and I am compelled to scratch. I can experience these sensations anywhere on my body, and it is very difficult to live with. I have had autoimmune thyroiditis, and I felt these sensations strongly when I was hyperthyroid. My doc and I have been looking for a possible lupus diagnosis but I don't meet enough of the criteria. My sister and mother have lupus. I'm going to email him now and ask if we can check me for B12 deficiency. Please let me know what your treatment is and how you are doing. Thanks, I've been looking for anyone with similar problem and have not found much of anyone. I recently came to the conclusion that what I experience is called paresthesia, and it can be caused by many things including thyroid disease, ms, lupus, B12 deficiencty etc. Please keep us posted. Susan

SusanM, do you also get hives? A bunch of us have discussed how we itch and get hives even when we're only slightly hyperthyroid.

To treat this, I take Maca (keeps me balanced, even though my doctor is keeping my meds slightly hyper as an anti-cancer defense). When I itch or get hives, I use either Calendula ointment, Aveeno ointment, or MSM cream. They all seem to work, although I think the MSM works faster for me.

Here's a link to the last time hives was discussed:

Re: Anyone else having symptoms of "Housefly bites"? Vitamin B-12 deficency!!!

I don't get hives, but thanks for the response. The sensations I feel are in absence of any rash. They are at times pinpoint sensations that can be described as itching, buzzing or at times a crawling sensation on my face especially. I have also experience an electrical like sensation (like first post) usually on my face. Paresthesia is "an abnormal sensation experienced in the absense of specific stimuli" (I'm taking this from an excellent article I found) They may be described as a feeling of burning, tingling, numb feelings, *****ling, pins and needles, skin crawling or itching etc. It is basically a nervous system abnormality that can be caused by many health problems like thyroid disease, diabetes, lupus, multiple sclerosis, B12 deficiency etc. The artile I found is called Paresthesias: A Practical Diagnostic Approach. I found it doing a google search if anyone is interested. Susan

Re: Anyone else having symptoms of "Housefly bites"? Vitamin B-12 deficency!!!

Hives?..Man o Man have I had hives in the past 20 years. They will come on for no reason, and usually in the upper half of my body. Most of my hives now are like small mosquito bites ( even in winter & I have no pets). Years ago I went for about 10 years with these swelling hot itchie hives, they have since gone, and no one ever knew what made them appear. They would be on 1 hand on the palm at the base of the thumb swollen, 1 foot under the front of the arch, top lip and a few times my eye as if something had bit me and it swell up with fluid. These all would take up to 2 days to dissapear. Almost always I would wake up with the start of it in the morning after sleeping all night. One of lifes mysteries I suppose.
Wondering if anyone experiences any similar style hives. The bad ones have stopped ( so far). LOL
