Our 14day old boy has had a positive thryoid test. I guess this means a thyroid deficiency. Can anyone shed some light on this for me. Is it treatable, if so how. The test will be re-run but I am trying to gather some info.
Hi Bulldog. Congratulations on your new baby! Do you have more specific information (tests that were done, the baby's values, and the normal ranges)? It is hard to determine what a "positive thyroid test" means. Also, does the baby's mother or either family have a history of thyroid changes?
If it means a thyroid deficiency, then the baby will be given thyroid hormone med. It is wonderful that they routinely test babies, because with long term deficiency it means cretinism, or mental sluggishness and low-growth. It is very treatable.
I suggest that you get tested yourself, to be sure you are not also deficient...thyroid problems usually run in families.
The book, The Thyroid Solution is a great place to start learning about this.
Congratulations on your new little one!!! <IMG SRC="http://www.healthboards.com/ubb/smile.gif"> TF
