Undertreated Hypo??

Six weeks after I started on Synthroid my T4 and TSH looked good, however they dropped after that test. Now they have up'ed my Synthroid and at first I felt great, but had my symptoms back at the 6 wk test and my numbers while being normal according to the lab had dropped from t4-1.2 to .82 and TSH from 1.84 to 3.43.

Am I just being undertreated and need to get my dosage right? Does anyone else have this problem?

Re: Undertreated Hypo??

Welcome lavafrogg. It sounds like you're still in the process of becoming balanced. It takes 6-8 weeks for each Synthroid dosage adjustment to become fully assimilated in the body, so it may be that you still need some incremental increases until you find the correct level for you.

It's a slow process. Are they also testing your Free T3, or just the Free T4 and TSH? It may be helpful to see if your body is properly absorbing the Synthroid and converting it to T3. Some folks need an additional boost of T3, but that is usually indicated when the T4 is high but the T3 is low, so it may be too soon to tell in your case.

Foods, weather, other medications, stress levels and many other external factors can also affect the thyroid levels. And, if you have thyroid antibodies, these can also make things fluctuate.

If you've not yet had a chance, read through our Information Archive thread. And let us know if you have any questions.
