Hey everyone! Hope everyone is doing well!
I finally had my appt with my new doctor on april 23rd!! THANK GOD THERE ARE STILL A "FEW" CARING DOCTORS LEFT IN THE WORLD! This makes dr #7 for me and finally I have found the one who took one look at me and sd "just why the hell did I have to wait so long to get treated?
You know what I did? Before my appt, I decided to write to this new Doctor and let him know just what all I have been through in the last 4 years and what I expected in him as a doctor! I gathered ALL of my tests and reports from prior doctors so he would have an idea of my progression with this "disease" I told him that I have been treated as if i was totally ignorant to how I should feel and told him I would not accept the word "normal" in our visit! Turned out he said he wished all his patients would take time to write to him. I knew that when I went in to see him, I would not be able to remember every thing that I have experienced in the last couple of years! I waited almost 3 mos for this appt and I knew that I would only get a few mins to actually talk to him - It is dificult to sum everything up in that time ! I ended up being there with him for over an hour, He was the most gentle doctor Ive ever known. He is about 60 years old ( which is why I chose him in the first place) I got real tired of dealing with the "wet behind the ears, Gun-ho morons that want to hide behind the word health care provider!! Anywho, this doctor takes one look at me and sd he could tell that i was in distress- He did an ultrasound in his office right there and soon as he saw my big beautiful 30 mm nodule (grew 10mm since Nov.) he ordered a biopsy and did it right there- hurt like the dickens but he said that he wanted to be "aggressive" will know the results in about a week.It appears that my thyroid has gotten so large that it is going sub-sternal! In the mean time he did draw some blood work as well. He ordered: TSH, T3(free) T4(free) DHEA and Testosterone- Why would he run a DHEA and Testosterone on me though? I did not know that he had ordered those 2 until i was in the waiting area to have blood drawn and he had already left. This is a litte confusing to me. Well he will call me with the results of the biopsy and blood work but i can not seem to find the connection of dhea, testosterone and the thyroid! other than they are all "hormones"? I go back to him in 2 weeks. In the meantime , Just when I thought that I was doomed to feel this way forever, I find the one that i feel is right for me and you know what? HE NEVER USED THE WORD NORMAL!!! yeeeeeeeeeeeeeeaaaaaaaaaaaaa yippppppppeeeeeeeeeeeeeee! am i crazy or what! at least I will know weather I have cancer or not ! it has been a difficult 3 mos !will let you know ! just please dont ever quit! take charge and let the world know you deserve to be heard! and never settle for the word "normal"!!!!
Love you guys

Re: Fna

Hey Marsv!
Welcome and thanks for the reply ! Do you happen to have any of your test results that you can share with us? What symptoms have you experienced? You mention you are having surgery on May 2. I wish you all the best for a speedy recovery. Did your FNA come back inconclusive for cancer? why would they say "likely"
Believe me, you are not the only one in the world who has had to endure thoughtless, in-human doctors! Just read these boards and you will see that you are not alone. We are ALL here for EACH OTHER! this is the only thing that has kept me Sane! ( well er um, as sane as i can possibly be anyway!) Keep in touch !
Love ya

Re: Fna

angel1, we've been missing you! I'm so glad to hear that you finally got a good doctor. And good for you for writing to him first!! Your symptoms definitely needed to be taken seriously and I'm glad you persisted to find someone who will help you get better. From the symptoms you've been describing over the past several months, I've been quite concerned that it took this long for a doctor's follow-up, and I don't like the doctor's note that your nodule may be heading sub-sternal. But his quick action is sure to help.

Please keep us informed! I'm so glad to hear from you.

marsv, the moderator removed your email address because this Board is meant to be a public area so we can all benefit from each other's experiences. If we posted our personal addresses, some very meaningful conversations might take place as private emails instead of here where the whole group can benefit. It's quite possible to "converse" (as it were) posting here; if you want to chat with someone specific, just post a thread addressed to them. You may get additional input from others, but your party will likely post back and forth with you as long as you wish.

We'll be thinking of you on May 2nd. I, too, had papillary adenocarcinoma (with some Hurthle cells and follicular cancer as well) and my surgery was a little over a year ago. And there are several others here who have had thyroid cancer and surgery who may be able to answer any questions you have.

I've posted a couple of things in the Information Archive about thyroid surgery such as what to expect (Page 2, 3/15/02), and homeopathy that may help you heal quickly (Page 1, 9/10/01).

Let us know if you have any questions.
[This message has been edited by ArtfulD (edited 04-28-2002).]

You are so sweet! I am the worlds worst at keeping in touch, My family always fusses at me for not keeping in touch w/them more than what I do. But most of the time I just feel so doggone yucky and crappy that I really do not want to bring anyone else down, Does that make sense?
How have you been? I sure hope all is well. How are you doing with your weight? Why would you think my doctor wants to chk my Dhea and testosterone? Talk to you soon!

Re: Fna

Hi Angel1 and others:

I too had an FNA done on my thyroid lump. This was on March 22. Turns out it was A Typical Non-malignant, but they found Hurthle cells. My doctor(of 21 yrs) was supposed to set me up with a specialist. I had made in the meantime an appointment with the doctor who had first seen me for my lump on my thyroid, this was on April 23, turns out my doctor hadn't made the appointment and she apologized profusely for him, as well as the fact that I have been waiting on all of this since Jan 28th(when I first went in). Seems as though this new doc is getting everything rolling. My visit with her was good, she is making copies of all of my test results for me, and also ordered up the DHEA , testosterone and about 6 other blood tests.
Seems my results are strange, she indicated that some of my blood work comes up Hypo, and others come up Hyper. I have posted here before with my results, but here's a quick recap:
Jan 28 TSH .285
Feb 1 TSH .385
Mar 22 TSH .411
1 year ago April/2001 my TSH was 1.29 it had been tested becauses I was experiencing hot, sweaty, faint weak feeling episiodes.
My T4 Jan 28 it was 17..and Feb 1 it was 12
Nuclear uptake was 28% after 4 hrs..and 50% after 24 hrs.
I had mentioned that I had petite mal as a child from 10 - 15 yrs old...and she wrote it down saying interesting.
I am still not on any medications, nor have they "labeled" what I have aside from a toxic nodule goiter(cyst)which was to be FNA as if a cold nodule.
Hopefully I have some answers soon.
Hope all goes well with your tests Angel.

Re: Fna

Hi angel1. I'm doing pretty well. Everything's stable for now, but I'll be going hypo next month when my doc has me stop taking my Synthroid before a follow-up scan.

My weight is and always has been relatively stable. I put on an extra 10 pounds with the thyroid disease but, while I'd like to get rid of it, I'm actually relatively normal for my body type. The only really unfortunate thing right now is this massive headache I've had for about four weeks. I'm used to long-term migraines that ebb and flow for a couple of weeks, particulaly when the seasons change, but this one is just lasting a bit too long for my tastes.

Anyway, I think your doc probably tested your DHEA and testosterone to see how well your hormones are interconverting. (Hormones, including thyroid, break down into other hormones in our bodies.) And some of the symptoms of low DHEA and testosterone are the same as thyroid disease. Nice doctor, good doctor. We want more like him.

Glad you're back.
