how to loose weight w/ hypo, i think ive got it!

hi first thing I don't beleive in taking weight loss pills or other "supplements" personally.
i'm hypo and have been for a couple years. Finally got my meds adjusted correctly which ended up being no small feat - but one thing i noticed that when i tried to loose weight the pounds seem to be glued on!
Healthy diet, watching calories exercise no matter what i did nothing for months! It seems whatever calories i took in my body would just adjust to that level and wouldn't loose weight but would gain if i dared increased the calories.... is this just me or has anyone else had this problem?

It would help to mention that i am 5'2" 140 pounds and "lightly active" at-home-mom so any calorie adjustments i can make are small since going below 1200-1400 cal a day leads to starvation mode most of the calorie difference comes in from exercise.

ok what i have found - ive lost 8 pounds since 12/1/01
which is HUGE for me and i'm continuing at about 1/2 pound a week on ~1400 cal a day diet (i ate a bit more over the holidays and didn't loose anything for a couple weeks)...the same calories I was at for MONTHS with 0 results.

the difference ? Is i am sure to eat when ever i am hungry, i choose from amoung the low-density foods (fruits veggies soup popcorn etc)that i like for snacks and eat healthy foods for meals. Sometimes if i really want something like tiramisu i will have it but eat perhaps soup or salad - dressing on the side and a appetizer of mussels maraina for dinner (two things i like) so that my calorie count stays with in my normal dinner range.

The concept of always feeling satieted(sp) having had enough to eat seems to be the magic spell!

It seems so simple but took me well over a year to figure out!

If my body senses its not getting food when it sends the hunger signal - down goes my metabolism. Is this true for other hypo folks?

possibly lo-carb ( i don't recommend it all personally but many seem happy with it) would work just as well for the same reason - protein foods are very filling and many say they are never hungry on it.

Anyway i hope this is helpful to someone i'd love to tell the world if its true for others.

I am very sure of the eating plan i was on, am currently on and what the results have been since have been keeping a daily journal for about the past year.

Please let me know your thoughts on this and if anyone else has had the same experieince and can concur with me.

Cyn

PS i follow the principles in Volumetrics and Dr. Shapiro's picture perfect weight loss.
[This message has been edited by momonline41 (edited 02-28-2002).]

Re: how to loose weight w/ hypo, i think ive got it!

Marilyn, "God's diet" i've never heard of that - it sounds healthy to me since it must include alot of fruits, veggies and whole grains and you can't go wrong with those as long as you include some protein source, which it sounds like you do....

I'm so glad its working for you. PLease help me out though ...

Do you eat something whenever you are hungry?

Do you feel as if you have had enough to eat most of the time?

that i think is the key let me know your answers to those questions please

thank you

Cyn

Re: how to loose weight w/ hypo, i think ive got it!

my weight has been constant since getting my thyroid stabilized, so no more weight gain, but no loss either, for over two years, regardless what I do.

My doctor and I are now trying glucophage for insulin resistance.

I used to lose weight easily by not eating after 5 pm, or lowering my carb intake. I seldom eat refined foods.
So, while it is not now working for me, those are very good suggestions for most hypo people.

Re: how to loose weight w/ hypo, i think ive got it!

Tree Frog thank you those wouldn't work for me either then key seems to be not ignoring hunger pains - not -not eating after a certain time or necessarily avioding certain foods i don't think refined or unrefined matters either but i doubt a diet of highly refined foods would be healthy or sattisfing to provide the amount that would lead to weight loss.

- if i am right in my thinking then not eating after 5 most certainly would NOT work.
You don't say if you increased your intake of other food enough to not feel hungry while lowering carbs - If not then my guess would be that also would NOT work.

For me its been working like this

i try to eat basically what i am hungry for

if its sweets then i have a piece of fruit or if chocolate then a diet hot chocolate.

Someone with different tastes or following a low carb plan or a "god-made plan" would make different choices of course to satisfy their hunger - just going hungry seems to be counterproductive to us hypo folks ... or at least to me. Maybe its just me but i really hope i can help at least one other frustrated person out there.

thanks

Cyn

Ps i was just reading an article that showed that people who became more active w/ exercise - reversed or reduced their insulin dependence - if you like i will see if i can find for you.
[This message has been edited by momonline41 (edited 02-28-2002).]

Re: how to loose weight w/ hypo, i think ive got it!

Hi momonline41,
I don't ignore hunger, and I do eat appropriate foods when hungry. I keep my blood sugar fairly level, so as not to create stress or a desire to binge.

Refined or not refined does matter, in my opinion, as refined foods have no food value in nutrients, and nutritional imbalances are not good for health OR weight loss.

I am fairly active, which is why my doc is trying the glucophage. I don't think it is at the dose right for me yet, though. I see her March 6th.
I don't have insulin dependence, that is a different issue.

There isn't any plan for weight loss that is for everyone. I have learned over time that the fat organ is a complicated issue.

Re: how to loose weight w/ hypo, i think ive got it!

Well as for me I am still not sure what will work for me. Before I had surg my endo was sure the thyroid meds he put me on to stop the growth of the goiter would make me go hyper. They did not of course. When I went the see him earlier this month I had lost a whole 5 lbs since surgery in sept. My labs are right were he wants them still on the same dose of 0.125 mg levoxil. I just purchased a treadmill and have been using that for about 2 weeks but nothing is going to be fast as this wt has slowly came on over the last 10 yrs. I am only 5'3" and I am at my all time high of 200 lbs. every one says I do not look like I am that heavy but let me tell you I feel every pound of it. Before I had my son 10 yrs ago I was wearing a size 3 to 5 and I am not in a size 14 to 16. The wt is taking a toll on me to as my pulse in generaly in the 125 range just after walking across the room so as for working on the treadmill I can only go at this point for about 15 min and then I have to stop because my heart is just racing. But when it slows back down I feel great. Still not sleeping well awake about 2 to 3 times a night. Oh well enough of my sob story for now I better go as I have to get up at 4 am to get ready for work.

Stay Happy and Healthy
Prayers to all

Re: how to loose weight w/ hypo, i think ive got it!

Tree Frog i'm sorry i meant insulin resistance - i was just too happy to have replies to my first topic ... adding exercise seems to reverse or decrease insulin resistance again i will look up the ref for you if you would like to see the details I don't know if it would be of any help to you but it can't hurt.

yes i know one plan is not for everyone that is not what i was trying to say , but i tend to ramble on and make things more confusing.

let me try it this way

for hypo folks to loose weight

a) pick or make up your own "diet" or eating plan that you decide will work for you to loose weight.

b)eat enough and often enough that you do not ignore hunger signals AND feel full ( full being feeling the weight of the food filling your stomach) after eating.

b may just be the extra bit some of us hypo folks need ( and maybe other folks too) to trick our bodies into accepting a weight loss plan with out going into calorie-saving mode.

The Volumetrics idea is that we need a certain WEIGHT of food each day to feel satiety. This idea is backed by reseach that shows the WEIGHT of foods eaten daily stays about the same regardless of the foods eaten. My idea is that a diet plan alone is often not enough for us. A diet plan + weight of food for satiety = equals weight loss in at least some of us.

I want to see if others have had a similar experieince and maybe if this is a valid idea offer some help to others.

I hope you find what works for you

Cyn

Re: how to loose weight w/ hypo, i think ive got it!

momistj you sound so sad in your post, hang in there it will get better... but you right small steps are the way to go i think...5 lbs a month is 60 pounds a year...just a thought you might find helpful Dr. Shapiro's picture perfect weight loss might be helpful to you, or a calorie guide to show you what calories are in foods and some small steps you can make to reduce calories with out to radical or time-consuming a change to your life, you know by now my thought of keeping the amount of food the same but making choices that fit in with your eating plan ---in my case its lower cal choices.

now i thought i knew every calorie count in the book
but i was surprized to see a plain bagel w/ cream cheese at 650 cal on one side and on the other 4 light pancakes w/ light sryup, 4 vegy sausages AND a plate of fruit!for the same 650 cal.

I loved a small caesar salad w/ grilled chicken it seems so healthy but its 560 cal vs 1/1/3 cup black bean soup 5 grain roll green salad, fruit salad AND a little sorbet for 410 cal!

best of luck to you let us know
hope this helps

Cyn

Re: how to loose weight w/ hypo, i think ive got it!

Someone linked to this page and I thought I would update. It turned out that Glucophage did nothing for me at all. I doubt I have insulin resistence.

I did lose 7 pounds in about 8 weeks, but now it seems my thyroid dose may have been too high. (sigh) I was just getting excited!
