Can one ever get off thyroid meds?

I was wondering...once on thyroid medication -- would a doctor ever recommend you come off?

Does the thyroid get "lazy" after medication?

Has anyone here known of anyone to come off thyroid medications?

Sincerely,
M

Thyroid medicine for hypothyroidism usually is for life. I've never heard of anyone getting of of it.

Re: Can one ever get off thyroid meds?

Hi there!
I had (have?) hypothyroid and I was only on Synthroid for about one or two bottles and they checked my thyroid and it was normal. Then they took me off medicine! They keep checking it and it still is normal (which I guess is really weird because it usually doesnt happen like this. Im sure Ill be put back on eventually.) About the thyroid getting "Lazy" Im not sure.
Take care

Re: Can one ever get off thyroid meds?

Lori,

Thanks for your reply. I'm tapering down from paxil, which supposedly interferes a bit with thyroid medication effectiveness.

Perhaps I can come down a bit in the amount of my thyroid medication...I suppose test results are going to be the deciding factor.

How do you feel since you stopped taking the medication? I realize you were only on it for a couple of months or so.

Re: Can one ever get off thyroid meds?

Hi Michael!
Well, I feel fine, thanks for asking I actually had no symptoms when I first went on the meds, I just noticed I had this weird small bald spot on my head. They tested my thyroid and they put me on Synthroid. So when I went off it I actually felt no different. Except the bald spot was gone!*laugh*
What medicine are you taking for your thyroid?
Take care!

Re: Can one ever get off thyroid meds?

Lori, I'm on Armour thyroid and doing fine.

Went for a hike yesterday and it feels like that did me a lot of good. Will have to do that more often.

Glad to hear you're doing so well, and that your thyroid problems may be over.

Michael

Moderator1, could you remove the ad from Donna1968 from this post? A giveaway is "ANY other problem you may have with no side effects".
