I have not posted in awhile because my medication Synthroid and my levels are supposedly fine. Not to say that I feel fine but that is another story. All of a sudden my Cholesterol level went from 270 to 309. I have very good HDL and perfect Triglycerides but I vaguely remember reading that being hypo causes high cholesterol. Did anybody out there suddenly develop this type of problem. What can a person do about this? Thank you.
Well that depends on what your thyroid levels actually are. If your Free T3 and/or Free T4 are low, then it is likely that your cholesterol wil be high.
f your doctor is going by TSH to determine wher eyour levels are, this indirect and is not always an accurate measure of your thyroid levels. Even so, most doctors try to get TSH into the "normal range" but what is "normal" for someone else might not be normal for you. Most people report feeling their best when TSH is hovering around 1 or so. "Normal" can be as high as 6--Very hypo in my opinion--and most people woudl feel awful at this point and have high cholesterol to boot.
My cholesterol was always very low. I was very proud of it <IMG SRC="http://www.healthboards.com/ubb/smile.gif"> But, then around the same time I became hypo it soared. Despite healthy eating and exercise, it is quite high and actually hasn't budged in a few years. I am planning to request a retest when I go to the doctor this month. I will keep you posted.

My cholesterol was very high when I first found out I was hypothyroid. After being on synthroid 1 year or maybe a little less my numbers are good! I have been feeling better lately. Decided to count calories and exercise. I walk 1 1/2 miles now and keep my calorie intake to 1,000 calories a day. I started Jan 1st. I have lost 10 lbs so far and have to lose 22 more. At first when I began my exercise I was very sore my legs and hips hurt but as I continued it got better. Now I am moving much better and the exercise has helped to the point that my hips hardly hurt anymore. I hope everything continues I am happy with my success so far and I am very focused. My cholestrol continues to stay normal. I get more thyroid testing in March and cholestrol as well. Joy
