back again with some concerns

Hi everyone
I haven't been around for a while due to the stress of my condition but i hope u r all doing well and getting better and better !
I've come back with a few questions. I might repeat some of my story so that u all remember what the last 10 months have been like for me.
Diagnosed with hashimotos in july 2001. I had vague symptoms and increased antibodies, other thyroid tests normal.
Have been on T4 ever since. Have been through many dose increases and decreases - ALL of which have made me sick - sometimes to the point of hospitalisation.
Ive been on a low dose of 50 mcgs now for almost 4 months...i'm no better..still very very weak...i'm still unable to get up on most days and when i do...i cant do much. My weakness is bone numbing, very weak leg and arm muscles and i'm always anxious/stressed... I'm not sure if this is ME or the medication.

I feel as though i have been much sicker since beginning thyroid hormone....much weaker...feel more tired...and look very sick and unhealthy...swollen face and sore swollen eyes..pale yellow complexion with BLACK rings under my eyes....my period has been irregular since beginning the medication and now i'm NOT GETTING A PERIOD AT ALL i also lost quite a bit of weight....everyone says i'm too thin

I dont know what else to do anymore.
My TSH is again <0.1 ( my T3 and T4 come back next week)
The last time my TSH was <0.1 my Dr dropped my dose.
I'm sure he will want me to decrease it now as well.

My antibodies had disappeared in my last blood test.
My question is...was i ever meant to b on this medication ? Has it made me weak to the point of being disabled? I remember how ILL i was b4 the meds BUT i am sure i could still do more than i can now. My life has been over for so long - i just turned 25 and the last time i could do anything i was 22
most days i cant cook for myself shop for myself or do anything for myself

Decreasing and increasing doses makes me very very sick...so i'm scared to decrease ...but perhaps 1 or half a pill per week could b a good idea?

IS it possible that i feel so awful because i am on too much ? I know TSH is not a good indicator of whats going on but maybe it is in my case ? anyway i am waiting on T3 and T4 results.

I'm just at a loss and feeling very very miserable about whats happened to me. Nothing has changed for SO SO long..i wake feeling shocking..i cant plan ahead becuase everyday is unpredictable...i may have one or 2 good days ( and really they are shocking but i am able to dress and do something light) out of the blue and BOOM back in bed again because that 1 hr of being active has felt like i ran around australia !
I'm just scared and sick of trying to work things out myself. I have a good GP now ..but i have a gut feeling the medication is not agreeing with my body..how do i find out if i do/dont need it?

thanx all
little

Hi little!
It is so good to "see" you!
But not to see waht you are suffering!

Why not ask for a one month trial of no thyroid med? The worst that will happen is you will realize you need to go back on them. you can always call the doctor.
You do seem hyper, from the symptoms.
The other day I forgot to take my thyroid, but overworked myself and my pulse was 110. I felt like a dishrag, all limp and unable to do anything. It scared my husband, I was so ill. Since then I have been just fine, but I know what you mean about how it feels to have the heart pumping too hard. It is exhausting!

I tend to think you may be over-medicated.

Re: back again with some concerns

Hi little. Good to have you back, but wish things were going better for you. Did you do anything to make the antibodies go away? (Selenium, Maca, etc.) I agree with Treefrog, maybe it is time for a trial stoppage, although it sounds like you feel ill no matter which direction your meds are changed (increased or decreased). Perhaps if you stop, and don't feel worse at the end of the month, you can investigate other options.

There's a person posting to this Board by the name of "axsai" who is going through somewhat similar problems -- gets very ill with dosage changes, can't tolerate or is allergic to most of the thyroid meds out there.... Although her problem seems to be the reverse of yours: she's hypo and isn't absorbing thyroid meds (currently taking 0.2mg of Levoxyl, TWICE a day, and still extremely hypothyroid). Anyway, thought you two might have some strategical ideas to compare and discuss that could help each other.

Maybe your illness is due to other autoimmune issues (fatigued adrenals, chronic fatigue, etc.). Have you tried to see a holistic practioner who can help bolster your energy levels? There's a lot of quackery out there for this sort of thing, but some of it is good stuff. I've successfully used supplements like Prime One and Brekhman's Gold for chronic fatigue when nothing else worked. It's mostly ginseng and other "warming" herbs, but it got me out of bed (long before my thyroid disease was diagnosed).

Let us know what happens.

Re: back again with some concerns

Hi TF and Artful thanx for your replies.
I'm not sure if i could stop the medication altogether ..i think that it would kill me lol...i think this only because of the bad experience i have had changing doses. Maybe i will slowly reduce and see how i feel. Could i have done any long term damage to my body ? - especially if i have been on thyroxine for 10 months for no reason ?
Are there any others out there who have had a similar experience ? I'm not getting heart palpitations or anything like that...which makes me wonder if i am "hyper"..its more the weakness and feeling as though i have been awake all night running around australia...but i'm also very hungry...i feel like nothing fills me up and i'm always running on empty.
I have been to a naturopath Artful..but was afraid to take all the drops and potions he made up for me..incase it made me feel worse. I have been eating brazilian nuts everyday Artful...they have selenium..so i'm not sure if that really had anything to do with it !!!
So u are feeling better on Armour TF ??
anyways thanx again people for your wisdom and concern!

Re: back again with some concerns

Hi little,
I wonder why you think you have been on it for no reason. Yes, you could back down on the dose a little.
We don't always have all symptoms. Can you have your pulse taken?

It won't kill you to be on too high of a dose for awhile, or to be on too low of one...or a bunch of us would be already dead!

Selenium is needed to convert T4 to T3, so that is a good nutrient to get. It won't hurt you.
