can starting synthroid cause muscle aches and headaches in the beginning? I have a friend who is just starting (day three) synthroid and feels a bit better with fatigue but is complaining of muscle aches and headaches. Also can hypothyroidism cause excessive dreaming?? thanks for any help
Hi judekate. Headaches are typically associated with hyperactive thyroid and body ache with hypo, but it is not uncommon to experience both as a new dosage is assimilated.
When I started Synthroid, I do recall having some rather severe headaches (I get migraines anyway), and my body ache stayed until we found the optimum level I needed. A friend of mine who had a thyroidectomy several years ago told me she also had headaches when she started her medication.
I've not read any studies about the dreaming, but I definitely have many more (and much more vivid) waking dreams when I'm hypo.
Tell your friend to hang in there. It will definitely get better in the next couple of weeks as her body adjusts.
The more one's sleep cycles are disturbed, by being cold, achey joints, etc., such as when one is hypo, the more likely one will wake during dreams.
Waking during dreams is when one remembers them most vividly.
Sorry I was unclear, judekate. When I'm hypo, I have rather vivid dreams (with lots of action) and I wake frequently during the night.
But the most vivid and complicated/disturbing dreams are those I have in the morning when I'm partially awake. I call those "waking dreams," though it may be a misnomer.
I feel okay -- almost like I should get up and start my day -- when my sleep is disturbed through the night. But in the morning I feel unrefreshed by my sleep and want to stay in bed forever. I used to think that was a sign of too much sleep, but now I think it's just part of my personal hypo/insomnia pattern.
To make it more confusing, I also have disturbed sleep when I'm hyper, but this is usually associated with my skin temperature being too hot. (When I'm hypo, I'll also awaken because I'm too cold.)
I think I'm ready for a new body thermostat. Anyone know where to get one? <IMG SRC="http://www.healthboards.com/ubb/wink.gif">
