Bruises?!

Hi, Guys.
Just a quick post .... I'm still adjusting my medicine. What a long, drawn out process it is, isn't it?!? I'm feeling sick again .. like a cold or something only with a fever and sore throat. My legs hurt every so many days and now I have a ton of bruises up and down my legs. What gives?! I take a lot of vitamins, so I don't think it's anemia. (That's the only think I could think of to explain bruises?).
Thanks. Hope everyone is doing well. Sorry I haven't been around much .. things are hectic.

Re: Bruises?!

Hi Enuf. We missed you! I seem to recall that Treefrog had a long drawn out bout of the flu/bronchitis recently, too. Hope you're both better soon.

Your post reminded me of a past thread discussing bruising. <A HREF="http://www.healthboards.com/ubb/Forum118/HTML/000749.html" TARGET=_blank>http://www.healthboards.com/ubb/Forum118/HTML/000749.html</A>

But you mentioned that your bruises were not from any incidents? Are they painful or just colorful? If you're not bumping into anything and bruises are appearing without any pain, please tell your doctor.

You may want to have a hematologist check to make sure you're coagulating properly. I know you don't think it's anemia, but it may be worth verifying. I know I look like one big bruise when I'm on the hyper side.

Re: Bruises?!

Hi ENUFISENUF,
Glad to see you on board!

I replied to your other post that vitamin C deficiency makes one bruise easily, and we need more C when stressed.. Hypothyroidism makes us stressed. Maybe you need more C than you are getting.

Try to take it easy as the holidays are even more stress!! Fun, but stressful!

Re: Bruises?!

Thanks, Guys.
I think I'm covered in the Vitamin C area ... I take over 4,000mg as per my doc. I'm inclined to thing Artful might be onto something. I may be going back toward hyper again. Blood tests are coming up again. I was hyper, then hypo, and now I'm noticing that I might be more hyper again. UGH! The bruises are not painful, just not pretty and huge. I haven't bumped anything -- I'm sure of it b/c some are on the back of my legs in weird spots. I'm going to check out this link and then I can't wait to see the doc.

My stress level is really high lately. So much has gone on. I really don't enjoy the holidays too much -- my family is INSANE! LOL.

Re: Bruises?!

Well...I hope you are not hyper again.
That would be hard going up and down with thyroid!!!

The expectations of the holidays can make ANYONE insane! Even the most sane person! <IMG SRC="http://www.healthboards.com/ubb/eek.gif"> <IMG SRC="http://www.healthboards.com/ubb/smile.gif"> TF

Re: Bruises?!

Are you taking Advil for pain? If I take Advil for more than two days, I start bruising very easily!

Re: Bruises?!

Thanks, Guys.
Nope! No advil or anything. The bruises don't hurt. I think I have been going up and down with my thyroid. It is pretty frustrating. I think it might be time to start researching/considering a differnt drug. This Thyrolar has not done for me what I had hoped. Namely, my hair is still falling although it is slightly less brittle/dry. I have lost some weight but then regained about 8 lbs. even though I think I'm back up high. My heart rate is still high. UGH! Yadda yadda. LOL.

Re: Bruises?!

Hi ENUF: Here's another who wants to attest to bruises caused by advil or aspirin. I just finally gave them both up because of such problems. But this seems irrelevant since you don't use them, I know.

Just curious, how long have you been on Thyrolar? It might be time to ask your doctor. I had a hard time on Thyrolar with hair loss and lingering hypo symptoms. I don't remember how long you've been treated but it did take me three years to normalize after diagnosis and part of that time was spent just finding the right medication and the right dosage. It was really a trial and error process with me. Don't let anyone put stress on you - Please!! Even during the holidays. Look who is talking since I'm the one who usually gets stressed during the holidays. LOL!! <p>[This message has been edited by blondegal (edited 12-10-2001).]

Re: Bruises?!

Thanks, Blondegal.
You wouldn't believe the constant stress I'm under. It's pretty much 24/7, but I do my best to take care of myself as well as I can for now. I have had many major life events over the past year or so. It's been tough, but things will get better b/c I haven't given up!
I've been on the Thyrolar for about 7-8 months. I'm disappointed. I was on Synthroid for a few years prior to that. What did you ultimately find works for you? I really have had ENUF! <IMG SRC="http://www.healthboards.com/ubb/frown.gif">

Re: Bruises?!

Hi Enuf: I've been on Levoxyl (137mcg) for about 5 years and I would say, that I'd still be searching for the perfect drug if I thought there was one. But there isn't. Levoxyl is not perfect and I've had to compromise and just accept that it's about the best so far. I hated the hair loss on synthroid and never felt like I could get well on it. Thyrolar was not good either (but this is not to say that it's not right for you.) We all know how complex treatment is. I had skin rashes, anxiety, paranoia - again not acceptable. I think stress undermined my getting well so part of the healing process, I knew, was up to me. I let family members and in-laws stress me out and always have. I'm not perfect and I see now how it tore me down even more because I could not cope with stress. It's a tough road but you'll get there. And Bless you!!! You've helped many people here by being forthcoming with this disease. Awareness and knowledge from others have helped me tremendously.<p>[This message has been edited by blondegal (edited 12-11-2001).]

Re: Bruises?!

I agree with you, Blondegal.
Stress will really work against you. It seems like a vicious, vicious cycle. My thyroid problem is stressful. Life is very stressful right now. Then, I'm stressed about the thyroid, more stressed, etc etc.
ENUF already! So, the Levoxyl helped your hair loss then? Did your hair get less dry? Did it come back?
I'm so tired of this. The holiday season is not helping matters.
thank you for sharing your story. I will update you soon....I should be seeing the doctor soon

Re: Bruises?!

Hello ENUF: My hair stopped falling out with Levoxyl and returned to its normal state. It is not terribly dry anymore either but I do have to use conditioner everyday, so maybe it is dry and I've just learned to live with it. The only other time I have noticed hair loss is with a medication called Estratest. I left that behind because my hair was falling out in a male pattern (right in front.) That scared me. Ugh! If it's not one thing it's another. Keep me posted on how you are doing. One more note: I also started a program of walking 4 miles a day. If I miss it's because of the weather or something I can't control. It has helped tremendously with stress - it seems to ease things out when I have a really frazzled day. I hope you feel better again soon - I think it is meant to be that you will work all this out. My best wishes for you.

Re: Bruises?!

What is Estratest, Blondegal? (It sounds like something female-related ??) My hair seems to be falling in a male pattern (in front) too so I'm not sure what is going on. I just know that it is so dry and brittle and falls from all over. It didn't do so until I started Synthroid years ago. It's hard to know if it was the hypothyroidism itself or the drug or both. I suspect now that it was the drug, but I know that I was concerned about my skin and hair when I first started to know taht something was wrong. Anyway ... I ramble but I'm so frustrated! I remain active too - it's my only saving grace! I always feel so much better after a workout <IMG SRC="http://www.healthboards.com/ubb/smile.gif">
Take care.

Re: Bruises?!

Estratest is a combination of estrogen and testosterone combined in one tablet to help regulate hormone imbalances. Women naturally produce a small amount of testosterone throughout their reproductive years and it does wonders for sexual desire and muscle tone. Later in life this male hormone starts to drop off. Some physicians suggest replacing testosterone along with estrogen thus the medication called Estratest. It might work for some but I hated it. I just cannot tolerate a bald spot right in front of my head so I refuse to take it. But I must say, I loved the muscle tone it provided. One other thing, it is a mood elevator to some degree in the best case scenarios, according to literature that I have read although I only noticed a mild degree of improvement. These are all worries of older women, you probably don't have to worry about it right now. How's it going? Take care. BG <p>[This message has been edited by blondegal (edited 12-13-2001).]

Re: Bruises?!

Thanks, Blondegal!
It's going alright .. so hectic I can't even get to the lab for bloodwork. But, it will take priority over the weekend. This is nutz!
More and more, I think it would be nice to be a man, no?! Honestly, sometimes I think they are on a different planet. It all seems so much simpler - 3 minute showers, no hair dryers, no makeup, could care less about a pot belly, a bald spot doesn't even matter so much to them.... LOL!!!!!!
Talk to you soon <IMG SRC="http://www.healthboards.com/ubb/smile.gif">
