Scan shows cold spot

My daughter has just been diagnosed as being hyper thyroid, a thyroid scan showed a cold spot (nodule), the endo didn't seem concerned, everything I have read points to more test to rule out cancer, since 15 % of these cold spots can be cancer. Should we get more test, and a different doctor?

Re: Scan shows cold spot

Your right cold spots can sometimes be cancerous, mine was. They did a biopsy, and found unusual cells.

By the way if treated early, it is very treatable. They just gave me enough med. to shut the rest of my thyroid off. I had part of it removed.

Don't be too frighten, it's cure-able. But find out soon don't wait. Diana <IMG SRC="http://www.healthboards.com/ubb/smile.gif"> Good luck

Re: Scan shows cold spot

Hi Sherrill. I agree that further study (such as an FNA biopsy) should probably be done to determine what's going on. What are your daughter's other symptoms? Does she have a suddenly hoarse voice? Is the nodule large? Fixed in one place? Is there more than one nodule and is this why she is hyperthyroid?

EndocrineWeb has a good list of symptoms that are more prevalent for benign or malignant nodules. See which scenario looks familiar and then present them to your doctor for discussion. If he/she says no further study is necessary and cannot satisfy you with an explanation why this is so, it may be time to seek a second opinion.
