My daughter is 11 years old. She was pretty small until she was 4. Between 4 and 5 she gained 25 pounds. I had the doctor check out everything and he found nothing. she gained 20-25 pounds per year after that. 2 years ago I talked to a dietician who told me to have her thyroid checked. She said that based on her activity level and diet she should not be gaining weight so rapidly. No doctor wanted to check it because they said she was tall. last month the doctor realised she had gained 40 pounds since September. He finally checked her thyroid, twice. He said she had hypothyroidism with no obvious cause. She just started synthroid a few days ago. Is this a commom condition in kids her age? She seems to have very excessive hair growth, can that be related? Is it possible that she will now be able to loose weight with diet and excercise? She has also been treated with Paxil for depression since she was 9. I heard that depression is also related to hypothyroidism. Can anyone enlighten me? This is all new.<p>[This message has been edited by restless (edited 06-05-2002).]
