Question Thyroidectomy hematoma ~ how long until body absorbs it?

I had a total thyroidectomy 8 days ago and have developed a large lump under my surgical scar. It is larger than the goiter that was removed,... about the size of an egg and causes slight difficulty in swallowing and breathing. I saw my surgeon yesterday who states it is a build up of blood from the surgery which my body will absorb over time.

My surgeon is very experienced and has been doing these surgeries for over 30 years. Normally I would trust every word and be comforted but he is rather distraught right now with a family crisis and I don't think he really paid attention to what I was saying during my appointment. He confused my case with another and didn't really spend much time with me. He just wasn't attentive, which I understand in his time of crisis, but that leaves me feeling unsure about what I was told.

Is this a hematoma and is it normal following a total thyroidectomy?

Also, how long will it take for my body to absorb this? I look deformed which bothers me more than the discomfort. Sigh.

Thanks in advance for your shared experiences.

Re: Thyroidectomy hematoma ~ how long until body absorbs it?

Does your surgeon have a Physicians assistant or a partner you can talk to? Or can you take a visit to your regular doctor so they can check the wound for your peace of mind?

Did you have a drain? My surgeon said he used it because it was less likely to have that much blood build up----maybe if you did you needed it longer.

I would want to get some attention because you have a real serious concern. I didn't have a hematoma, I did have an infection post op, when I went to my follow up the area was burning to the touch, and i went on antibiotic and it was fine, but I was glad to talk to the surgeon about it.

I really feel after care is lacking in these situations, and we all don't know what's normal and what's not, and it's good to speak to a professional and ease your fears. Your surgeon is an experienced professional and likely absolutely right that this will be absorbed over time and will go down, but you need someone you can talk further about it with.

I hope it goes away quickly!

Thank you for your response.

I had a drain for two days. When I had a previous surgery to my abdomen (diff surgeon) I had drains for nearly 3 weeks!

I have to go to his office today to pick up a release for work. The Dr. is out indefinitely due to his family situation so I'll see if the office staff can provide some insight.
