Choking caused by sore throat?

I have been diagnosed with a lumpy thyroid with significant nodules. It is being monitored but I have many more months before my next ultrasound and follow-up.

Suddenly I have started feeling a choking sensation. It is particularly bad when I put my head in certain positions. I started the same time I got a sore throat. I have assumed the sore throat is viral related.

Has anyone else had a similar experience? Will the choking sensation go away when my sore throat does?
Should I seek medical advice? From my family Dr or my ENT specialist?

Re: Choking caused by sore throat?

Hi Angela,
I think you should get in touch with the doctor who is monitoring your thyroid nodules. It doesn't sound like something viral if it is choking you especially when changing the position of your head. Let them know that it is causing you discomfort and that you cannot wait until the next ultrasound. If your doctor is unable to get you in sooner you can always try a walk in clinic and tell them you would like to be sent for an ultrasound because of your symptoms. I hope you feel well soon.

I agree with acilim.

Do you have Hashimoto's? Thyroid inflammation increases in tandem with activation and presence of antibodies. The higher your antibody count the harder your thyroid gets hammered and the more inflammed it gets as a result.

If you have never had a thyroid antibody panel run insist on it.

The test codes are TPOAb, TGAb, TSI, TRAb.

I have nodules that are monitored as well. We set up yearly US appointment now that things have stabilized, but the MD ALWAYS stipulates that if symptoms from said nasty thyroid increase or magnify to come in and get evaluated early.

Nodule growth and activity is not a predictable thing. You can be stable for years and then in the matter of a month grow a whole new thyroid. My mom can attest to that one. They removed half of hers and ten years later it was back bigger and nastier than ever.

Re: Choking caused by sore throat?

Hi I am new here and found this forum while doing a search on the web. The past few days I have been feeling like someone has their hands around my neck or someone pushing in on it. I have not been tested for anything yet nor seen my doctor for this problem. By the sounds of my symptoms they are identical to this. Before it got this bad i was getting sore throats and swollen glands here and there. Has anyone else had that with this choling feeling. I am so freaked out my throat is going to close up. I dont know if I should see my doc next week or go to urgent care. How serious can this get?
