Hair Coming out!! Hashimoto's, High TSH, High FT3, Low Ferritin
I've been lurking on this forum for the last two weeks - ever since a Dr. at a walk in medical clinic told me after talking to me for 30 seconds, that I'd have to take Thyroid Medication for the rest of my life!
In June (2011) I started to get very, very tired and my hair started falling out. Got through the days, but still tired throughout the summer and the hair loss was getting worse by August. I knew something was up. We don't have a family doctor due to an extreme shortage in our area so I am at the mercy of the walk in clinic. Tragic, but that's another issue. I asked them to run tests for a bunch of things I thought might be contributors to my issues.
Blood tests revealed the following:
TSH - 8.76 (High)
FT3 - 4.2 (high)
Ft4 - 14pmol/L (normal)
Ferritin - 11 (low due to very heavy periods)
TPO - 1640 (Hashimoto's)
A very nice Dr. (not) at the clinic looked at my results, told me I would have to take Thyroid medication for the rest of my life and sent me on my way. This took all of 30 seconds. I went home and started research, research, research. I realized I didn't want to take synthetic hormone because of the hair loss associated with this drug. I went back to the clinic and made them write me a script for desiccated thyroid....they gave me 30mg of ERFA (same as Armour) and told me to take one a day. I'm also doing iron replacement therapy to get the iron up.
Now, after much reading and research, I know I've got to increase my dose according to my symptoms and go from there. I'm going to have to be my own advocate for this disease and I'm overwhelmed.
My biggest question is this...Is my hair falling out due to the thyroid issues, or the low iron? Can anyone answer this? And when will my hair stop falling out?
So depressed....what a lifeline this forum is. Thank you so much in advance for any advice or words of wisdom.
