Re: 5 yr old boy with subclinical hypothyroidism

hi all , we went to the endo regarding those old labs, i will mention them again:

@28/6/2012
FT4 16.8 pmol/L NR(9.1-23.0 )
TSH 4.1 MU/ml NR (0.350-5.010)

first:
she raised the dose of levothyroxine to 50 microgram every day
the previous doses was 25 micro grams 3 days, 50 micro grams 4 days

second:
she approved to request the iron full panel tests, cortisol test, FT3, FT4, and TSH, although i wanted to request RT3, but this test is not available here in Jordan

all these tests will be done after 6 weeks , on Sep, 9 , until then i will be supplementing him with iron and looking for other supplements, can anyone comment or interpret or advise regarding the results and the doctor decision, i need any feed back please

Re: 5 yr old boy with subclinical hypothyroidism

His high TSH could mean that his FT3 level needs help so, it's good that level will be checked next time. (I wouldn't worry about a rT3 test....based upon my research, the FT3 test really tells all one needs to know about T3 levels)

His TSH could also indicate that his FT4 level is still a little too low for him so, the small dose increase is appropriate.

If you do have him supplementing iron, please make sure any iron supplements are taken at least 4 hours away from his thyroid meds since iron significantly interferes with absorption.

Hopefully, your son is taking a good multi-vitamin that is appropriate for his age and, additional Vit D3 if his level was shown deficient.

Best of luck to you both moving forward - please keep us posted!
