Re: Totally new to hyperthyroidism

I also wanted to add that I'm quite nervous about going completely off the meds, mostly because I have relied on them for so long and not trusting in my body to be ok w/o them.

Re: Totally new to hyperthyroidism

Your progress on ATD's is amazing! Some people do achieve remission pretty quickly.

Just so you know, remission is confirmed by the combination of a few things: TSH .3 or higher (range doesn't matter), FreeT4 level near the high end of the range (or at least above mid-range) and TSI < 40% and preferably lower.

Obviously, your TSH level meets the criteria, your FreeT4 level is too low and I'm not sure about your TSI level.

Have you had your TSI level checked recently? This could affect my advice.

You see, the TPOab's and what I think you mean are TGab's (thyroglobulin antibodies) are at levels commonly seen in Hashimoto's thyroiditis, the most common cause of hypothyroidism.

People do test positive for all of these antibodies and the state of their thyroid is pretty much governed by which antibodies are in control right now.

If you are still dealing with TSI, BRT (Block and Replace Therapy) would probably be the best plan moving forward - I'll explain more once you confirm your most recent TSI level.

Staying on ATD's when as hypo as you are isn't really a good idea since being hypo can cause an increase in antibody production (plus it's just not healthy).

Since your selenium level is already above mid-range, I'm not so sure I'd supplement anything more than what is already in a multi-vitamin like Centrum. Selenium is toxic in higher amounts and, while it's a necessary part of conversion, it's unrealistic to think that supplementing it will bring your FreeT3 level up to a more appropriate level. (if I haven't calculated 60-80% of range for your FreeT3 for you already, feel free to post the ranges and I'll do so)

Besides the hives, are you dealing with any symptoms? If yes, would you please share them here?

The answers to the various questions I posed will help me give you better advice.

Re: Totally new to hyperthyroidism

I haven't gotten my TSI checked since the very beginning. I will ask to get it rechecked at my next labwork appointment.

Besides the hives, I really don't have any other symptoms. I feel good...

Re: Totally new to hyperthyroidism

Hi Sammy!

How are you? Hope all is well. I had my monthly appointment with the doc and everything is looking pretty good. I also had my TSI levels checked. My original numbers on 1/13/12 was 297 and my numbers as of 8/27/12 is 156, with both reference ranges at <140.

7/30/12
FT4 1.2 (.73-1.95)
FT3 2.7 (2.3-4.2)
TSH 2.7 (.5-4.7) new ref ranges as of 7/11/12

8/27/12
FT4 1.16
FT3 2.7
TSH 2.0

Just a refresher, I've been doing 1.25 mg every other day, doc advised we should do it every 4 days. I'm feeling really good, other than my hives (argggghhhh, no changes). My FT3s can come up a bit still. I also got labs done on a day I didn't take any meds. What do you think of my numbers?

Any plans for the long weekend? I've been working part time from home and really enjoying being able to use a part of my brain that has been dormant since pre-kids lol.

Thanks, Sammy.
