Ok, I have been sufficiently keeping my head in the sand and waiting for my surgery to come up. But it just keeps hitting me in the face!
Last week I told my parents. Then I had to take in my FMLA paperwork for the doc to do last week. Today we had a discipline meeting to basically say there is no one to cover for me (talk about guilt, right?), then my sister called tonight worried over the prospect that I may have thyroid cancer...
Seriously, I am now freakin out! The internet is a wealth of information about what COULD go wrong with a thyroidectomy...sometimes it is better to be blissfully ignorant
words of encouragement anyone????

Re: FREAKIN OUT!!! Count down to surgery...July 6th
The best thing to do is give yourself a mini-vacation---stay off the internet for research, enjoy the time with kids and summer.....trust that you found the best surgeon/match, there's nothing you can do about anything so push it as you can out of your head.....appreciate your life, and family.......thyroid cancer isn't going to kill you, and isn't going to shorten your life, and neither will the surgery......
Enjoy the world....this is an opportunity to enjoy things just as they are.....take it just one small tiny step at a time, and you will be fine.

Re: FREAKIN OUT!!! Count down to surgery...July 6th
I had my TT over two years ago....it was not nearly as traumatic as it seems. My recovery was quick (even having to spend an extra night in the hospital because of calcium levels), and it was no time before life was back to normal. Or as normal as they can be w/o a thyroid..lol. Don't stress over this.

You don't say why you are having a thyroidectomy, but if there was suspicion of cancer by the Dr., you would have had a biopsy with abnormal results, and I think you would know that already. So for a goiter(enlarged thyroid), thyroidectomies are done all the time, and really are not a complicated or dangerous procedure. They are careful to preserve the 4 little parathyroid glands that control calcium and phosphorous, and careful to give you a wound closure that will heal nicely cosmetically. You should do just fine.
