Question Lab Help??? MD not helpful!

Hello Everyone,

I've combed the internet trying to figure out what exactly my labs mean and my MD brushed me off....any help/direction would be REALLY appreciated.

I am a 28 yo/female.

TSH 3.1
Free T4 0.8

I am exhausted and totally frustrated with my MD and her lack of explanation.

Any thoughts?

Thank you!!!
Kim

Re: Lab Help??? MD not helpful!

Hello Welcome to Thyroid Board
If you posted the reference range for FT4 we'd be able to give you more accurate comments but with typical US ranges (of 0.8-1.8) your level would be low and a TSH level above 3 is higher than we typically see with healthy people so your levels look hypothyroid. The fact that your labs are (barely) "within range" does not mean your labs are fine, if and when you have thyroid related symptoms they're not fine for You.

Re: Lab Help??? MD not helpful!

The reference range with my labs I was given:

TSH 3.16 (Range 0.4-4.5)

TF4 0.8 (Range 0.8-1.5)

I really appreciate your response. I read on an Endocrinology website the TSH levels were changed years ago to 0.3-3....why do MDs not consider that range?

Thank you again!

Re: Lab Help??? MD not helpful!

We have found that many MD's just don't understand thyroid disease even if they are aware of the recommended ranges for TSH.

There are people who have "normal" (aka in-range) TSH and even suppressed TSH yet are still dealing with hypothyroidism.

Thyroid-savvy doctors know that thyroid status is always determined by looking at the actual FreeT4 and FreeT3 thyroid hormone levels and not just pituitary hormone TSH.

In addition, those same doctors know that healthy people have FreeT4 levels near the high end of the range and FreeT3 levels in the upper half/upper third of the range.

This stuff is in thyroid textbooks yet, it seems many doctors cheated their way through thyroid class.
