Total Thyroidectomy Post Op

I had a TT last friday. My surgery was supposed to take 2-3 hours but ended up taking 6 hours. Once they went in they found that the thyroid was "harder" than it should have been. They also found that my thyroid had created new nerve endings / blood vessels in an attempt to correct itself. So instead of a handful of these things that needed to be cauterized there were 100 or more.

When I came to in the recovery room the heals of my feet were in extreme pain. The surgeon thinks it was because I was on the table for so long. I think there was something at the bottom of the table that was uncomfortable such as those leg contraction wraps. Maybe they were rubbing on the bottom of my feet when they inflated. Don't really know for sure. I stayed in the hospital overnight which was ok. I would have been miserable whether I was there or at home. I was on an IV all night so needed help to get to the bathroom. I never went below the calcium range to be concerned about my parathyroids. Was glad to be home as the bland hospital food was just that...bland.

Once I came home I took the pain pills they gave me and slept the rest of the day. Every 4 hours I was taking my meds. I only took a week off of work so I'm a little concerned if that was enough time off. By day 4 I was taking less pain meds but started to ice the incision area. Day 6 and 7 I woke up with a sore throat. Doesn't seem related to the surgery more like a cold?!?! I'm also coughing up some mucus which may confirm my theory about having a cold.

I wanted to say thank you to everyone who has shared their stories here. I did a lot of reading before making the decision to have this surgery and more reading before the operation itself. I continue to read your stories as I want to make sure I'm in the "normal and acceptable" range of recovery. There are always questions and I appreciate the answers I find here.

Good luck to everyone.

Re: Total Thyroidectomy Post Op

Sounds like that thyroid just didn't want to come out at all---good thing you caught it at this point, probably only would have gotten worse over time. Isn't there a thyroid condition where it becomes hard like a rock? Is that what you had?

Keep checking the calcium, because that can happen at any time post op---not just immediately, but over weeks.

Sounds like you need to rest up a lot---I highly recommend ices and ice cream! I got a sinus infection a week or so after my surgery, I think these surgeries invite all the germs to your respiratory system.

Quick healing thoughts to you!
