Is there a difference between brand name Synthroid and generic levothyroxine?

I was taking Synthroid (samples from my endo) for about one year until a correct dosage was determined. When blood tests showed normal thyroid,
the prescription came back from the pharmacy as levothyroxine which I
assumed would be the same as synthroid. I started having hot flashes and
now after three months on levothyroxine they have gotten quite severe.
Could the generic be the culprit? I did not have these flashes on the brand name. Is there a difference? Has anyone experienced differences between the two? I know that hot flashes can come with hypothyroidism but my
blood tests have shown normal thyroid.

In theory different brands of levothyroxine should work the same but there can be differencies in absorption, fillers etc. When you find a brand that works for you, you should stick to that brand to avoid possible difficulties with another.

When I was on a generic I would feel very flush after taking it and my heart would palpitate. It was very strange. After switching to synthroid I have never had that happen even on the same dose.

Thanks Leighsa. It is good to know that I am not the only one. I will not take the generic and will insist on only Synthroid.
