It's entirely possible for your hair to return to what it once was but, it's going to take some time.....a lot of time.
You see, hair has thyroid hormone receptors and is very sensitive to: too-high thyroid hormone levels, too-low thyroid hormone levels and/or moving thyroid hormone levels.
Obviously, hypothyroidism means your thyroid hormone levels are too low.
Starting meds and getting dose adjustments means your thyroid hormone levels are moving.
The hair growth cycle is 3 months.
All of that said, you can expect re-growth to start about 3 months after your levels have been optimized. Unfortunately, it takes easily 6 months and usually closer to a year (or slightly longer) for our dose/levels to be optimized.
The best we can do is to get labs every 6 wks. and push the doctor for dose adjustments until levels are similar to the types of levels healthy people have: FreeT4/T3 60-80 of range.
I lost hair every time my dose was adjusted and there were times it was flat and lifeless.
Now that I've been stable since June of last year, my hair has body, fullness and shine.
