levo and statins??

Hi there, i've been on 25mcg levo for six weeks. I had my check up yesterday and although my FreeT4 has gone up to 13.8 (from 11), my cholesterol is still too high at 7.8 (my TSH is now 2.97 from 3.01).

Instead of my GP upping my thyroid dose, he said it'll be better to put me on statins for the cholesterol and still keep my levo low because my thyroid is just borderline. He's probably right, I really don't know, but my concern is will my thyroid ever jump up to the required 'feel good' levels - especially if I continue with such a low dose. I realise my FT4 has risen from 11 to 13.8 which is good, but what is considered a reaonable thyroid level to start losing weight and feel like normal? I've heard statins have many side effects such as muscle aches, not really what I need right now??? Is anyone on statins and if so are you ok on them? Any advice on my levo prescription do you think 25mcg is adequate for my thyroid level. It seems Doctors vary so much from what they are prepared to give you!!!

Re: levo and statins??

Twenty-five mcgs is almost never an adequate therapeutic dose! Fifty is the lowest "real" dose, and that's what you should be taking. Your doctor's reasoning is absolutely misguided. I fired a doctor for the same kind of thinking. He wanted to prescribe a different medicine for every symptom I had (including a statin that I refused to take) but adamently refused to prescribe thyroid hormone. Eventually, thyroid treatment (from a new doctor) lowered the cholesterol and eliminated the other symptoms I originally sought help for.

Your doctor should be targeting your TSH to be around 1.0. That's where healthy people's TSH falls. I think your FT4 should be in the 17-18 range (but you'll have to provide the lab's reference range for that test before knowing that for sure).

See if you can sweet talk him into a 25-mcg increase. If you can't, you may find better thyroid care in the hands of another practitioner.

Re: levo and statins??

Thank you for your advice, I'm inclined to agree with you and am getting more and more frustrated with my doctor, it's like he just doesn't want to up my thyroxine, yet I know that I'd feel so much better if he did.

Why do they resist giving this medication?

I'm going to change my doctor, the one I've got is very young and perhaps too inexperienced in this field, I'm not a human guinea pig for every drug going - I know how I feel and I'm convinced that once my thyroid is working my cholesterol will go down (afterall, it was only 5.6 before my thyroid went bananas on me!!). Surely it's common sense to just up the levo - what's wrong with these doctors?

Fed up x

Re: levo and statins??

I would ignore the amount of thyroid hormone and focus on how you feel and what your test results say.
If it only takes 1 microgram, so be it. If it takes 35 or 50, that's what's right for you.
My advice is to be polite and firm that you desire to try a small increase.

Your experience is may not be the norm. My endo says she has to correct a lot of initial overdosing by general physicians.

There is a direct relationship between low thyroid and high cholesterol. I agree, your Dr is misguided, and should be increasing your thyroid dose which will lower your cholesterol and help you feel better. 25 mcg is like spitting in the ocean and your TSH is still too high. I would seek treatment with someone else who is knowlegable about thyroid and its relationship to cholesterol.

Re: levo and statins??

My first dr. (i'm going to see #3 on Friday) was more concerned about my cholesterol than my TSH and Antibody levels. I told her I refused to take a statin, to enter into my chart and not to worry about my cholesterol. I truly believed it would come down once the Levo (50cmg) got into my system. Sure enough 6 weeks later blood test showed Cholesterol had dropped down from 259 to 220. I don't understand why the doctors don't understand the correlation between cholesterol and thyroid...it seems so obvious! If possible, I would find a new dr. - perhaps chat with them prior to going into the office; might save you some money and time. Good luck.

Re: levo and statins??

Again, I'm inclined to agree with you, these doctors don't seem to think there is a direct link between high cholesterol and low thyroid. All I wanted was for him to up my levo to 50mcg but he just wouldn't, preferring to give me statins instead. My cholesterol already went down slightly on the lower dose levo - so it stands to reason that a higher dose would mean a further drop in cholesterol. I've already started the statins and haven't had any side affects, but was thinking of getting some supplements to improve my thyroid as I'm only on 25mcg and still need a boost. I might try selenium, some B vitatmins and zinc etc - I've also started using maca root which comes highly recommended for thyroid sufferers. Any advice out there.....?
