Can a 9mm cystic nodule cause pain?

I have a lot of pain and swelling in my throat. The ultrasound reports states that besides some small nodules there is a 9 mm nodule that appears cystic. Suggests rechecking in 6 months. Could that 9mm nodule be causing the pain, and if not, what could?

Thank you!

The nodules are probably not causing the pain. The most common condition that causes thyroid nodules is autoimmune thyroiditis, called Hashimoto's. This condition is caused by antibodies that are produced againstnyour own thyroid cells, which results in inflammation. It is the inflammation that causes the pain, and sometimes enlargement of gland (GOITER). Part of your workup should be anti-thyroid antibodies, as well as hormone levels for thyroid function (TSH, free T4 and T3). Frequently an antiinflammatory like OTC Naproxen will help some with the discomfort. You can also try ice packs on your neck for relief. Eventually, if you have these antibodies, the gland will gradually stop functioning and you will need thyroid medication. Sometimes early on the thyroid is overactive and needs suppressed, hence why the hormone levels are important. You may have already had these tests, if so, this will just help explain a bit.

Thank you - I had the blood drawn and am waiting on the antibodies testing results. Is there anything else that could be making my throat swell?

Unlikely if the pain and swelling is over your thyroid in front of neck, not inside your throat like a sore throat.

It's likely not the nodule, but you should ask for an fna/needle biopsy if that is causing pain. It might just be in a bad location and pressing against a muscle or nerve, but pain is a symptom that shouldn't be ignored, and that's large enough to biopsy to rule out any suspicion.
