Anyone else have this after TT?

Hi all,
Has anyone ever heard of this? Thoughts and reaction appreciated!

Basic background - 6 mos post-op TT with left laryngeal nerve damage (not cut - stretched too far during surgery). Left vocal cord is permanently in the closed position.

3 weeks ago suddenly, without any warning, had a pain in that location...extreme pain that caused me to tear up and forced me to stop talking for about an hour. It felt as though the tissue had ripped! - although I'm fairly certain it did not. This occurred repeatedly every couple hours for 4.5 days. After that, I had a sore throat..especially on the left side... but not the extreme pain.

I went to the doctor last week with a sinus infection that began immediately after these few days of pain. Explained to him what had occurred. He felt around on my neck and said that I have a dried pocket of phlegm under that vocal fold. He told me that because that side doesn't work anymore, that it can not clear mucus effectively. He also cautioned that this could quickly become a real emergency with little warning due to infection and abscess.

I am now a week into antibiotics and although the sinus infection is almost gone, my throat hurts almost as bad as it did when this all began. Doc gave me 2 rounds of z-pack to take back to back so I don't know if I should wait and let the antibiotics do their thing or report back to him about the pain.

I have to acknowledge that I'm a little disgusted and concerned that this is even possible. Why didn't anyone warn me that this complication could occur? Is this common for those of us who have vocal cord damage? Has anyone ever heard of this or dealt with it in any way?

Thanks for any and all input. I'm just trying to figure it all out.

I'm so sorry you are going through this. I never heard of such a thing. I do have a friend that had vocal chord paralysis, I think she had injections for it. But I never heard of this.

If you don't have one, find an amazing thyroid specialist, and go for an appointment and see if s/he can help you figure out what's going on.
