staples left after thryroidectomy

I had an esophogram done this morning and they showed me staples in my throat on the images. I had the thyroidectomy in 1999. Why are there still staples in my throat? Is that normal?

Re: staples left after thryroidectomy

Yes, it can be considered normal. It's not unusual at all to have "surgical clips" (they don't like to call them staples) anywhere that you've had surgery. They don't cause problems and are quicker and easier for the surgeon to put in than stitches. They love their staple guns.

Stop worrying.

Helen
