Hashimoto's related constipation

Hi all. Just wondering if anyone has found a natural way to improve constipation caused by Hashi's. I try to do things naturally first if I can. I tried taking magnesium and that didn't help. It has been suggested that I try aloe vera juice or some sort of flax capsules. I don't want to take a laxative if I don't have to.

I am eating gluten and dairy free. I eat a lot of veggies and fruit. My doctor did say that my TSH is going up and started me on a higher dose of Levo. Perhaps the higher TSH is the reason my constipation has become worse? What ever the cause, I am just looking at how to correct it or at least ease the discomfort.

Any ideas or suggestions? Thanks!

Re: Hashimoto's related constipation

I've been reading a lot about how gluten free might not be enough. There is technically gluten in all grains, including rice, so you might try not eating those for a bit as well. There are also foods that your body attacks as if it was gluten, cross reactive foods. You might want to try and cut these out for awhile and see if it helps.
Some of those are:
• Cow’s milk
• Casein
• American cheese
• Milk Chocolate
• Sesame
• Hemp
• Buckwheat
• Sorghum
• Millet
• Amaranth
• Quinoa
• Yeast
• Tapioca
• Oats
• Coffee
• Corn
• Rice
• Potato

Re: Hashimoto's related constipation

TSH is only an indirect sign that your hypothyroidism has become worse, and yes - that is probably the root of your constipation problem. You'd do better to quit watching TSH and figure out what your best free T4 and free T3 levels are and to optimize them.

I have no experience with this remedy, which has been recommended many times by the newspaper columnist MD, Dr. Donohue. Mix 2 cups of Miller's bran (available at health food stores) with 2 cups of applesauce and 1 cup of prune juice. Refrigerate; take 2-3 tablespoons daily. But work on those FTs in the meantime.

Re: Hashimoto's related constipation

as Midwest said work on the levels, in the meantime some remedies that I can think off:

- triphala (it's a natural supplement; please check it out before you'd take anything)
- fiber tablets (again a natural supplement)
- first thing in the morning: fresh orange juice and a kiwi
- molkosan (again a natural thing)
- baking soda/bicarbonate in water (not cold not warm, but in between - English is not my mothertongue and cannot come up with the word
- add vitamin C to your magnesium
- one which is quite often forgotten: chew chew and chew your food some more and make sure you drink enough water.
