I underwent dry needling for a little over 6 months. It helped me a LOT!
Mine was quite painful as (according to my therapist) my trigger points were more aggressive than most and returned quicker than most. So, the insertion of the needles hurt a bit going in and the first few minutes of therapy was uncomfortable, but quickly diminished - I would sit with the needles in for 20 - 30 minutes for the muscles to relax and occasionally fell asleep with needles in. I often had pain / headaches for 24 following therapy (which I may have had anyway) but would feel better after that for a couple days. This apparently is where mine returned quicker than most, I would go to therapy once a week for different muscle groups.
Many (or most) people do not experience a lot of pain when they go in, but it is possible. It was always worth it though, I kept going back!
Along with my bite guard I have had a lot of improvement of my tmj symptoms.

I went twice a week for about 6 months, but that is MUCH longer than most of the patients (that my therapist sees) go. I have an underlying issue that is causing my muscles to tighten up that caused me to go longer and more frequently than average.
So, one session per week I would get needles in my back, shoulders and neck. The second weekly session I would get needles in the temporalis and masseter and sometimes the scm muscle in the neck (that one hurt the worse and caused me the most lingering pain).

I tried dry needling with a physical therapist and I went for about 6 visits without significant improvement. However, my therapist stuck the needle in and then took it out right away- my needles weren't even left in for over a minute... just a poke, wiggle and then moved on to a different area. It sounds like the way you describe- your needles were left in for a long time. I wonder if perhaps I need to find a therapist who leaves them in longer. Maybe that is why I did not notice any improvement.
If anyone else has gone through this treatment, how long were the needles left in the muscle?
Thanks!

Correct, my needles were inserted into the trigger point, pulled partway out and reinserted several times in each trigger point then left there. Once all the needles were inserted (typically 12 - 18 per session) they were left in place for 20 - 30 minutes.
I would recommend finding health care professionals you are comfortable with and who have a LOT of experience working with TMJ/TMD.
Dry needling is additional training for a physical therapist. While there are tons of physical therapists, only a few of them are trained in dry needling, only a few of these are good at it, and fewer yet are those who are experienced with TMD treatment.
I drove an hour each way to see the PT who did my dry needling, twice a week for over 6 months (roughly 5,000 miles of driving for dry needling alone last year).
I wish you all the best on your road to recovery!

I think you should not expect significant pain relief after only one treatment. Treatment takes time. The insertion of the needles can cause some soreness for a day after treatment. Keep going and give it a chance to work. After multiple treatments then re-evaluate if you think it is doing you any good.

My PT left needle in for only a few seconds. Just wiggled the needle a little and did like your PT and moved to over areas. It was not painful.
