Tmj ears clogged

Hi everyone,

I have been suffering from tmj for almost a year. I have stuffed ear caused by TMJ. I tried mouth guards, dry needling, yoga, meditation... and nothing works. Also, from what I read before none of the people who has stuffed ears cause by tmj were able to get help. If someone has suffered from what I'm suffering and was able to get better please reply on this message and let me know how.... It affecting my life and this is a serious problem. Thanks

Hi Chloe,

I know exactly how you feel. I have been suffering for 8 months with muscle spasms in my face/neck/shoulders caused by my tmjd. Ear problems are one of my main concerns- I have major sensitivity, echoing, clogged, and sometimes pain in my ears.

After seeing no results from anti inflammatories, muscle relaxers, dry needling, massage, and chiro... I finally broke down and began splint therapy. I just finished my first week and so far do not have any improvements. It is heart wrenching and scary to live this way. I am just praying to be heading in the right direction. Only time will tell. Too bad I am already running thin on patience.

By the way, there are many people here who have had all of their symptoms improve or go away entirely with treatment. It may take some time but you can get there. What other symptoms do you have? Do you know what caused your jaw problem.. injury or clenching/grinding?

Since your conservative efforts have not helped you at all, I would start researching TMJ specialists and see if they can confirm the problem is indeed with your jaw.

I have been to 2 TMJ specialist until now I haven't seen any progress. I'm wearing a new mouth guard other than the ones that I had before. I go every month to California for treatment my new doctor is there .... I hope your treatment works for you too. I'm kind of hopeless at this point

Hi Chloe,

I know that it is disheartening to not see results... you have probably just not found the right doctor yet. What type of splints have you tried? Are your discs involved or is yours purely muscular? You did not leave much detail in your post so it is hard for me to respond and make suggestions for you. Hang in there... we will get through this.

PS... I noticed you live in Atlanta but your doctor is in CA? You may benefit from having a doctor more accessible/closer to you.

Indy

I have clogged and sensitive ears too. They pop and crackle and drive me insane. I went to doctor after doctor and was finally diagnosed with multiple food allergies. After two mos of following a strict diet my ears were only slightly better. So now the ENT wants me to start allergy shots. He's convinced it's allergies. Another ENT thinks it's TMD. I had zero jaw pain until day 3 of the splint and now my bottom right jaw hurts! My ears are about 70% improved while wearing the device.

Re: Tmj ears clogged

Hi Sally,

If you're in a repositioning splint like I am, it may take some time for your jaw muscles to adjust to being in your new position. That may be why you're beginning to notice some jaw pain. It is a positive sign that your ears have improved so much and so quickly! Based on your other post it sounds like your muscles are relaxing some too in your neck and shoulders. That is great news! I have not had as much luck yet..... I have been in my splint for 9 weeks now... no noticeable improvement yet- I may have a slightly larger opening but the pain has been the same or slightly higher. Very frustrating disorder to have...

Indy

Re: Tmj ears clogged

What does your splint look like? I am wondering if I have the same one others are talking about. It's a clear plastic looking thing that covers all of my top teeth about half way up in the front. It looks like an occlusal splint.
