TMJ surgical choices

I have suffered from TMJ problems for many years and wear a mouth guard every night. My TMJ has worsened over time to the point where I am in miserable pain, I cannot open my mouth enough for my dentist to get xrays. I have had MRI done and it is shows bone on bone, sharp bone spurs and arthritis. I have been referred to an oral surgeon who specializes in TMJ surgery.
I am facing possible surgery. Either open cut surgery or total jaw replacements on both sides. The latter is much more invasive but holds my best chance of relief....
Has anyone experienced TMJ surgery? I would be most grateful for your input!!!
