Question Tongue Problems

Hi
I have just found this board and I was wondering if any of you have had tongue problems. Have you ever problems with your tongue getting tired from moving the food around your mouth...along with your cheeks form chewing? I just find that my tongue gets tired and sometimes a little numb feeling from moving the food around and chewing..Does anyone else have this symptom??

Thanks so much,
Karen

Hey Karen,
I just about dropped dead when I read your post. I came into this board to post THE SAME QUESTION!!! My dentist says that I don't have TMJ but I have been suffering the same numb & tired feeling. I also have a burning sensation (same as if you had burnt your tongue on hot coffee) It starts mid morning and peaks after lunch. My dentist is convinced that I have Burning Mouth Syndrome (mainly caused by menopause or nerve damage) I'm not so sure of that anymore since I completed medication for GERD and the burning is pretty well gone. I am left with this numb and tired tonuge. Have you noticed any speech problems? I have some even though my husband says he doesn't hear any problem with my pronuciation. I am starting to think it might be caused by the teeth clenching I am doing while at work. I have been poked and prodded and have ruled out anything serious. If you don't mind me asking, what is your story? Hope to hear from you!
Dunk.

Honestly, I have Gerd too...Unbelievable...

My story goes as follows I have degenerative arthritis in my neck and I am pretty sure its in my lower spine also..I have been having pain in my back with muscle spasms that radiate into my shoulders...needless to say just trying to mop the floor is a task. A few months ago, I was standing at the sink eating a banana and my whole mouth got so tired and my tongue just kind of went numb and tired..but then it was fine. It didn't happen again..but a few days later I had the most horrible pain in my jaw..My jaw has always popped, clicked and grind..LOL,,but I have never had pain as this..The pain went away after a few days, but now every time I eat its like my whole face and cheeks get so tired. I just want to keep the same expression and it won't be so tired. My tongue gets so tired and some times numb.. the numbness will go away once I stop using it..My neurologist sent me for a brain, vessel and cartoid artery mri...but all worst pops up ALS MS etc...and yes I do have speech problems..because it just seems that some of my muscles in my tongue won't form the sounds right..I don't know how to explain it,but sort of like novacaine.if that makes sense.

I do have constant sinus problems and in the past 2 years have had 10 ear infections..with the latest being now and with both ears..
I also have the burning mouth and tongue..It drives me crazy...but the dr said I am severly anemic and that is I guess a reason...some days I feel as though I am going crazy!!!
How long has this been going on for you?

thanks for the response,,,
Karen

It looks like we have more in common - I get terrible ear and sinus infections as well as back problems (not as serious as your though). I have been living with this for close to 2 years now. I only wished I was anemic though, a few shots of B12 supposedly straightens out the "burn". Have you tried that yet? It really sounds like you might have TMJ when you mentioned the jaw pain and the clicking and popping. What is your dentist saying? I have been fitted with a night guard for grinding in my sleep. I also suffer from panic/anxiety attacks (boy, I'm just falling apart here, LOL). Are you suffering from any stress disorders?

You said "the numbness goes away when I stop using it", sorry, but I didn't catch on to what you were using, could you clarify? Your novacaine comment hit home, that's exactly what it feels like! I find that when my tongue isn't burning it feels dried out or like it's been rubbed with sandpaper.

Hope my questions don't sound nosy but its a rare day that I find someone with the same problems!
Cheers,
Dunk.

Hi,

The numbness that I talk about or the tired feeling is in my tongue and it will generally go away once I stop eating or chewing. LOL.. I have an appointment with the dentist in January..It was the only one I could get. The tongue bothers me the most. It was funny because when i mentioned this to the Neurologist he said oh thats TMJ,but yet when you read the symptoms that other people have, this isn't mentioned as a problem..So maybe I am not crazy after all...

Thanks a bunch and have a great night
Karen

i was reading both of your symptoms, i don't have the tongue thing, but my tmj is all on the right side & my lips on the right side of my mouth will get numb & tingly & feel swollen at times. also, reading about all your ear infections, well i went that route too, about a year and a half of ear infections & 19 different anti-biotics til the ENT told me that ear infections in adults are not that common. that the eustacion tubes in an adult are larger than a child & that's why adults rarely get ear infections. mine never showed any signs of infection, had all kinds of tests & nothing showed, but i continued to haunt the poor ent doc cause of the pain. in the end we found out it was tmj causing all the ear pain & not any infection. hope this helps both of you.

Hey Lori,
I have wondered for a long time if my clenching has caused this. My dentist (whom I trust), does not think I have TMJ, but a definate grinding problem that could turn to TMJ. Lately the "hinges" of my jaw hurt at the end of the day and perhaps the problem is getting worse. As I mentioned I do get ear problems that my doctor thinks is caused by the sinus (which I get terrible infections of). He said "the plumbing is all connected". I think I will have to go back to both the dentist and doctor to be re-evaluated on the TMJ thing. Thanks for you post, every piece of information is helpful!
Cheers,
Dunk.

I think I have a similar condition as yours. I grind/clench alot while sleeping sometimes when I'm really tired in the morning or when it's cold. It's a bad habit sometimes I don't realize I do it. The hinges my jaw hurt too... the right side at least.

I'm wearing a splint now but I clench on it at night... I'm still sore in the morning from clenching my splint. I hope it's not making it worse. I hope the splint can lend itself as a protective "cushion" B

My TMJ specialist is just doing that laser therapy. I go in every week (once a week) and he puts some laser on the hinge of my jaw cause that's where it hurts... and told me to learn to relax. But my jaw still hurts! I spent so much money (almost 2000 dollars) for this treatment plan and my jaw still hurts! I'm starting to worry that no one can help me. I hope it gets better.

Re: Tongue Problems

Hi Karen I couldn't believe my eyes when I saw your description with the tongue thing,I could have written that word for word.I have been to my primary care who had the arterys checked then sent me to a neurolist , who had a cat scan and blood work done.We tryed a mussel relaxer and that didn't help. Now we are trying Clonazepam at bed time to keep me relaxed and from grinding. It knocks you out,no stressing no dreams your dead for 7 hours.Wake up fine with no jaw pain, that has helped with the TMJ pain. But i still have this tongue weakness after eating and talking alot along with speech trouble.I 'am going back to the Doctor in March. Also I do have GERD and we started medicine for that.In the mean time I'am freaking out! Robert

No I'am still being treated by my Dentist with a night guard, it's been a couple of weeks and I think it's starting to help. Also taking muscle relaxers at bed time & GERD med's before dinner.Doctors think it's TMJ / TMD.Have you been checked up yet?

I have all the same trouble - jaw pain, tired, numb, burning tongue. I've seen every doctor and now I'm seeing a tmj specialist. Have you had any luck?

Re: Tongue Problems

Hi I'am having a terrible time trying to figure out how to use this message board. But I have had this tongue issue for over a year now, and i finally think my dentist got it right.Saying it's a form of TMJ & clenching, he has me whereing a night guard(2300.00) and taking Magnesium 500 twice a day.It is a muscle relaxer and its safe to take and works better than the meds i was taking. If you would like to call me my # is 301 325 5378

Funny - I' in the process of having a 24 hour a day guard made (same price!). I was also given a Medrol pack (steroid to reduce inflammation - started it today). I'm so desperate because no doctor has ever been able to confirm tongue involvement with tmj. So I get nervous!! This dentist saw that both tmj's are herniated and said he'll try to calm down the muscle issues. I should know in a mont or two if it's working. Let's keep in touch. Thank you so much for replying. < edited > I'm at my desk all day. Good luck.
